Pulled the butterfly today. My bike has map3 and fmf power core. I did not adjust the TPS or idle. It ran good before the removal and better after. With these 3 mods the bike runs strong. One of the best changes is hot starting. I was having difficulty with that. If I added a little throttle it did not help. Now I can add a touch of throttle and it fire right up. Doesn't seem to make much sense with the fbw butterfly being open a bit, but it did make a difference. From the bike purchased to now is night and day improvement. Also dropped front sprocket to 14t.

The more I run my bike tuned the way it is, the more I'm starting to believe the Akro Map is made to run without the butterfly in!

It runs so well without it!!!

    I'm with you, Ford!

I lead two of our faster guys on another ride on Friday, a great selection of tracks I've found lately that I've now put together in a loop.
We now have a 56km run that has fast undulating trails, massive descents, hill climbs, a river crossing, logs, grass lined single-track & some freshly repaired fire-trails with about 5km of erosion mounds to jump over every 100m!!!

My bike just hauls & loves it all

    No trouble keeping ahead of the 2014 501 Berg & 350 Kato.

Reading through this thread still trying to comprehend everything, I've never had a flame out on my 511, would this still be of any advantage to me? I read that it increases engine braking, is that an unavoidable side effect? Being a 2 stroke guy for most of my life has caused me to dislike abrupt engine braking, and was one of the features I really like about my 511 vs most other 4 strokes.

Removing the butterfly does not affect engine braking. Removing the 'stud' that controls the main butterfly is what adds engine braking.

Removing the butterfly provides a 'snappier' throttle response and eliminates the 'dead throttle' issue if you've ever had it.

Ah thanks for clearing that up! No idea why I typed throttle braking instead of engine breaking, one of those days I guess!

DButterfly removed from my te 449 '13 as well.I never had any flameouts on mine but curious to see if it runs better.Do you need to reset the TPS after?Does anyone know what the intake valve gap is ?My manual says one thing ,dealer says something else ,anyway had to close the gap from around 0.25mm to 0.1mm bud haven't taken it out as yet to test..

If you didn't have flameout issues before, you may not need to reset TPS, however, it may be leaner down low at larger throttle settings without the butterfly in. You may need to play with the TPS then.
Here are the factory settings from the manual - Perhaps there's been an update, my own bike is still in these limits after 125hrs without adjustment :)

Thanks mate ,i forgot to mention i do have aJD tuner so i suppose i can make some adjustments so is there still a need to adjust the TPS or just do a reset. As far as the valve specs go they're more like the TC,weird..

You don't have to do anything with the TPS

well pulled the b/fly out of mine and took it for a hundred mile spin through some real hard sections, world endure type tough, light and day better throttle response.no flame outs, not that I suffered with them really. running race map 2 as unable to get three loaded at the moment, just won a full titanium arrow mx pipe setup cheap, will be interesting to see how that works. will vote in the survey shortly.

I have read here somewhere that it is possible some TEs were set up ex-factory to TC specs, can't find it atm....
The TC runs different cams, so different profile lobes on them. That will likely be the reason for the differing specs.
If it was mine, I reckon I'd want to return it to TE specs.

What say you guys out there?????

I don't think there is any 'risk' involved with letting the valves get to like .35 or .40. Just means they won't open quite as far. Shimming for a .05 change seems like a waste.

Oh and I was thinking that the tighter specifications for the TE are probably for 'emissions' mainly and not some other 'mechanical' reason.
