  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I've been reading all the posts on the automatics. Is there anyone making springs and the spring retainers covers that I keep seeing on here? Most of the posts are quite old so just want to see if anyone has any newer info on transmission parts for these bikes.

I have 3 sets of brand new springs, a brand new 1st gear clutch drum with shoes, and a new 2nd/3rd gear drum, and a set of 2/3 gear springs.

I am in Alberta Canada and can only buy the Univis J26 in a 200 litre barrel. Anyone know of a source in Canada for this oil in a smaller quantity?

Hope to hear from you Auto guys.

Later.

I think every body including me and I am the original bodger make them themselves.I looked at Michel's posts, cut out a cardboard template or two till it looked ok, then out with the angle grinder, dremel, files etc. I used a bit of scrap to make it out of, I think it was an old electric drill box! In the UK we can get the oil in 20 litre tubs.

I having been riding the Autos for a long time and have several 360, 390 and 420 autos. For the last several years I have been using Pentosin ATF1 with excellent results. It is a full synthetic and easy to get at Napa parts stores here in the US. I have tried many other oils and most of the trans oils would break down rapidly and then the shift quality would start to be less than optimum requiring me to change oil after each ride. With the Pentosin I can go through three tanks of gas on the same oil, could probably use it even longer but haven't as the Pentosin only $16.00 a liter. You can purchase it in 1, 5, 20, 60, 210 liter sizes. My local Napa store always has the 1 liter bottles on the shelf.
For the spring retainer, we all make our own. Takes a little bit of time but easy enough to do. Husqvarna made some for the military but you will wait a long time to find one.
It is getting harder to find the first gear clutch springs. Hopefully someone will step up and make some. Hope this helps,
Marty

I have not, but a friend of mine ISDE Vet and AA enduro rider, Kevin Hutchinson does. He has an '87 430 Auto with a countershaft driven oil pump, through a filter and a cooler. He has raced the bike for years and won overalls on it as recently as 2007. He says the Maxima shock oil is a direct replacement for the Esso Univis OEM oil and it is the easiest to get, its the only thing he uses. He said Bel-Ray HVI shock oil has the same specs and should work but he has never used it.

This is Kevin's description of his bike.

"I simply built a new freewheel cover, ran a Honda atc 110 oil pump off the input shaft to the tranny, ran the oil through a little oil filter housing, then up through the cooler, and back to the fill plug I built, so the "cooled" oil dumped right on the first gear drum. The oil cooler made it never overheat however... always ran "cool"... You would have had to have ridden one to completely understand that.. "

Great the Maxima oil is easy to get. $16 a litre in Canada. Great oil cooler setup. We can always improve on factory equipment.
1 of the autos I have has more coolant hose looped on the right side which I would think was to be able to hold more coolant since these ran so hot. The other auto I have has 2 fans installed on the back sides of the radiators. I would have thought the water cooling was adequate but I haven't spent much time riding mine yet.

I'm definitely going to look into adding the oil pump and filter. Certainly the fluid and transmission will last even longer. With parts being scarce, this is a good option.

He said the filter helps a lot to reduce the amount of metal in the oil, and the whole filter/cooler system adds capacity which also helps the life of the oil.

Amazing !!! Very nice job...:applause:
If I understand , he CNC machined a new freewheel cover and screw on it a 110 atc oilpump.
How is connected the oilpump to the shaft ?

He also adaptated a rear disk brake.
Mikuni carb or Keihin ?
Thanks for the pics !:notworthy:

Yes, I thought the pump ran off the countershaft, but I think he is running it off the transmission input shaft. It has KYB forks, Keihin carb and a rear disc off a later Husky.

I like the "simply built a new FW cover" .
Here's a Honda atc 110 oil pump .
Kartwheel,If you can get more pics of the cover
which is in front the the oil pump, that
'll be good.
Thanks

Regarding the oil, I usually use the Swedish army pressure oil 051 but I can also sometimes use Statoil 131 it seems to be almost the same as Univis J26. I have friends both inside and outside the military who used ATF oil and I dont recommend anyone to do that. I see that motomwo using it with god results but he is the first one and I've seen alot of ATF users.. The watercooled 430 dont have the same bearings as the older have so that can be the reason

Is that your own Spring Cover? I am buying one of the bikes off 430Auto in Alberta, I am wanting to make a spring cover as well. If its your own, can you get measurements or point me to another thread. This seems like a great forum, but its daunting to navigate a new website to find the info needed. Took me awhile to find this page to figure out what oil I am going to need for it. I was worried about oil life, but I am hoping to find more info on the oil pump/filter conversion as I would like to use the bike for day trips, nothing overly hard, cruising dirt roads and what not in the surrounding area, maybe 4 or 5 hours of running per day tops.
