Portugal's Paulo Gonçalves (Husqvarna) has managed to get a podium place in stage 7 of the Dakar rally by overtaking Cyril Despres (KTM) at CP3. He finished the special in third place, 46" behind the Frenchman. Hélder Rodrigues also performed well and took a well-earned fourth place, 3'46" behind the leader. He was followed by Gerard Farrés Güell (+6'50"), Pal Anders Ullevalseter (+8'07") and David Casteu (+8'43", seventh). Ruben Faria came in eighth, placing his KTM 8'48" behind today's winner, and ahead of Frans Verhoeven (+9'24") and Jordi Viladoms (+11'26"). Hélder Rodrigues (+49'39") holds third in the general classification, behind Despres and Coma and ahead of Paulo Goncalves (+55'33") and David Casteu (+1 h 05'38") who round off the Top 5.

    BLACK AND WHITE FOR BARREDA

After a particularly explosive start by the rider by SPEEDBRAIN HUSQVARNA soon pick up the trail
leaders and installed in a surprising 2nd place just a few seconds of Marc Coma for much of
the stage, in KM 270 of the special Joan takes a wrong decision and the wrong direction, which will cost
precious minutes and the delay in particular to the clasification.

Joan Barreda. "I had a good day, always pushing and trying to contact Marc visually and Despres, but in a complicated zone I made a mistake. On one hand I am saddened by the decision, because I could have done a good result today,
but I found that my pace is fast and secure. I am satisfied that, although today I was wrong in
a decision, I have made the mistake with a high speed, similar to the leaders. It is not easy, I've only run 7 stages of Dakar in my life between last year and this ..Stage could have posed a more conservative and probably would not have failed, but I decided to keep intact my ambitious spirit. Now rest here in Copiapo and we analyze the remaining stages. Our Team HUSQVARNA by SPEEDBRAIN stays close to the targets set, so expect a nice second half of the rally. We have shown that our HUSQVARNA is a great bike. # 23 "

Full throttle - but not without problems

Stage eight of the Dakar 2012 saw mixed results for the Husqvarna Rallye Team by Speedbrain. Joan Barreda was fighting for another podium finish before ending the day in fourth. Paulo Goncalves meanwhile had a difficult stage. Lying fourth overall in the morning, the Portuguese lost one place. He was finally content to complete today´s race at all.

The stage was fast and dangerous, often full throttle and sometimes really tricky. Former race leader Cyril Despres and Goncalves became victims of a mudhole that was not marked in the roadbook. Both got stuck.
Goncalves generously helped Despres out of the mess, and the Frenchman promptly sped away. Goncalves was then assisted by the race director.

The incident costed a lot of time, which was handed back to Goncalves afterwards. But more bad luck occurred, when he hit a stone one kilometre from the finish line. Goncalves had to push his bike to the finish with a damaged drivetrain. Quite lucky under the circumstances, he "only" lost 24 minutes on Marc Coma, who won the stage. Goncalves dropped back to fifth overall. But on a day when it was important to finish, he did just that.

Joan Barreda avoided the mudhole and was going for a top three result. He just missed out, as Ruben Faria and Helder Rodrigues got the better end. Barreda lost valuable time and a precious podium riding in the dust of Stefan Svitko and Juan Pedrero. Good: the Spaniard rode smart and didn´t take too many risks.

Zé Hélio also suffered at the mudhole and lost almost one hour. Discussions are going on whether to credit him lost time. Jose Manuel Pellicer keeps improving. He´s sitting right behind his teammates in 25th.

Tuesday brings the longest special of the rally. Canyons, loose sand and 556 kilometres of special test await the riders. The stage ends with a georgeous descent to the Pacific Ocean at Iquique.

The two videos before this show how misleading media can be, first one put out by the Dakar media, second of what actually happened
judge for yourself. Personally, I think Despres is a jackass.
