  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

250-500cc WR300 love thread.

Some info please on the 300's/250's please! Not much on googled :(

Whats the power like? I have read they are a couple of HP down from, other 250 2t's...
Handling? (Are they stable in the front end at speed, good suspension?)
Are they hard to ride? i'm hoping for a wr250/300 (i want more bottom end power/torque for slower wheelies and trials type riding, and yes i do have a trials bike) by the end of the year-into early next year, and i hope they don't bite to hard! Are you able to detune them a bit easily?

What you're describing is exactly what I have my 09 wr250 set up for. A Lectron carb is the best money spent to smooth out the tractor like power, it actually gives you more power but also makes it easier to ride. I added a pipe but only because I smashed the stock one. If you are tall you will really like this bike, I'm 6'6" and it is the most tall man friendly bike I've ever ridden. I had my suspension re-valved but for my height and 210 lbs that's a must for any bike I buy. I've had my wr over 80 mph with no wobbles but where it really shines is in the really rocky stuff that everyone else hates, like baby head sized rocks in a creek bed or drainage. My original top end went over 300 hours and still had a little life left in it when I freshened it this year. I service my bike better than most and only use race fuel and Amsoil Dominator or Interceptor. So far besides the usual chains, sprockets and tires I've replaced 3 lower shock bearings and a set of swingarm bearings. There is no need for a flywheel weight because the stock 55 watt stator/flywheel combo makes the engine feel like a mx bike that has a 16 oz weight.
 
It's a good technical bike, with nice high speed stability and is also one of the tightest turning mid sized bikes you will find. I'm only 5ft. 5 in. tall, but I find the bike to be a very comfortable platform for all day riding. I haven't done anything to the engine or exhaust except for putting on a new FMF spark arrestor just this year. I just recently replaced the piston and rings after 5 seasons of riding. I replaced the seat foam with Guts Racing soft foam, added the proper springs and valving to the suspension for my weight and riding conditions, put a better clutch cable on, added the JD Racing jet kit to my stock carburetor, and bolted on some hand guards. That's about it.

Thankyou both very much for the answers. So they don't have a monster bite like say a Honda CR250 or YZ250 when hitting powerband do they? Im just hoping going form my CR125 (awesome bike, easily pulls the front up hitting powerband in gear 3) at the end of the year or next year im not going to get my arms ripped from their sockets.
 
The don't really have a monster bite like the bikes you mentioned. The compression ratio the Husky motors have is much lower than a Jap motocrosser so you don't feel so much hit.

Oh ok sweet thanks for that. i don't really want much more hit than my 125 does, i am just after the bottom end grunt for the things i mentioned wheelies and slow riding etc.
 
Although my bike has heavily modified suspension, the motor is stock. I run an FMF Gnarly and TC2 spark arrestor. I think the motor is just awesome. I have ridden super technical hill climbs and rock sections in washes that have guys on big 450s stuck and cussing up a storm. Gaskets, pistons, rings are easy to get so keeping it running isn't an issue.

The only down side compared to a modern bike, is no magic button. But once you figure out how to get it started, and get the carb sorted it's pretty hard to stall.

True dat, tons of smooth torque off the bottom of the 300. Admittedly it was a real headache to kickstart when it was new, but after tuning and fiddling with the carb, and 5 seasons of riding, the bike is always easy to start in 1 or 2 kicks, except when it is cold, first time in the morning.

Hahahaaaaaa that's the plan, am going on my own so will have to pace myself as my riding buddy isn't there an we keep each other level headed.
 
OK, guys (and girl), I pulled the trigger on a 2011 WR300 a few days ago. it's a big move for me because I've only ever ridden 125's. I'll be using it for natural terrain motocross, long races, and some mixed MX/woods events. I'm 5'6"/145. The bike has rad guards, skid plate, PWK carb, and hydro clutch. What should be my first move to make it better suited for what I want to do?
 
Congrats on the new Husky! You probably should look into getting the suspension set up for you. Probably need softer springs. My 2008 was great for MX tracks.

nice work, i think you will like the torque after you get used to it.
just have to let the bike do the work, instead of working the bike around as much..i dont do moto-x but i like my 360 doing woods work. the torque can be used in a multitude of ways... helping steer the bike, 2 wheel hopping logs, varying types of wheelies, etc etc..hillclimbs are way easier than even a 250 as the bike will respond with a surge from even a walking pace. i run a flywheel weight and a lectron so its always a smooth power but is still very strong.
track usage i bet it will be handy for shooting out of turns and getting to speed quickly for jumps. intimidating roost for those behind you is helpful as well..
riding a gear tall and working the midrange should provide some awesome traction with the suspension set up well.
 
Agree with set up suspension. You are somewhat close to my height and weight, and setting up the valving and spring rates was an early priority for me. I'm old too, so getting a Guts soft seat was high on my list too.:banana:
 
Well it has been a while since I have been on here (about 7 bikes to be exact) but its funny how things go full circle from my old 05 TE 510 to a tip off I got that this WR 300 has just been traded in and this is a photo of it as traded , bike shop is shut so I am sussing it out first thing in the morning I think its an 09 these were supposed to be pretty wild and they tamed them down a bit ?wr 300.PNG
 
Negative that's a 12 or 13(forget with the graphics but def one or the other-same bike though) huskybloke. Silver rims n black frame was 12+. How much they want for it? Screw em down with the ol no longer in production, can't get parts line!

Needs a case saver n looks like got the nylon chain guide off a 125/310 as pretty sure 250/300 had the crappy ally guide til the end. Can't have dun too much work as oem rear sprocket still on there by looks of it! Seat bn shaved? Bashy, Handguards, fork bleeders n rad guards if assume so looks ready to go

Think the only reason 09 model was dubbed wild was due to 250 pipe which made it revvier/mx'y. Maybe ignition difference too. 10+ got different pipe plus 48 kybs. Same chassis as wat ya 510 was so should feel familiar in that respect
