  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc WR300 love thread.

The gearing I like the best is 15/48, opens up the gear spacing and with the rekluse 1st gear is still low enough for in the tight stuff.

Best mod that I ever did is go to a left hand rear brake (LHRB). With the auto clutch the bike is magic, much more braking control by hand than foot.

I truely love my 300.

Later..
Could you provide details how you rigged up lhrb?

I bought & installed a JD Jet kit last summer. It completely transformed the bike, power is instant & a lot more controllable. I can really notice the power valve controller now, I can dial back the power a little in the slick stuff, where as before I really didn't notice adjustments because of the slight throttle delay. My next purchase will probably be a skid plate, I don't think I need a recluse, the promotion cable eliminated my clutch drag.

I rode a couple weeks ago without a kidney belt for a 30 mile loop, man, I paid the price in my lower back. I could barely move for 2 weeks & I didn't even crash. Lesson learned, bought bigger pants for my belt to fit in.

NCSteve: I've been riding/racing the Italian Huskies since 1989 and it never even crossed my mind that I needed a case saver. Not had a problem so far. So I can't answer that, but the chain slide needs to be trimmed a little where it wraps around the swingarm pivot. The 15T sprocket just clears the swingarm. On the plus side a larger sprocket is easier on the chain.

I am using an EFM auto clutch, third bike it has been in. Rekluse wasn't yet making one for the 2T Husky back in 2006. I don't run a foot brake pedal at all, and the clutch is a small bicycle lever under the Magura master cylinder at the bars. Only use the clutch lever for Hare Scrambles dead engine starts to get the revs up faster.

This is the best setup bike I have ever had.

Good luck, with a little tweaking the full potential doesn't take much to tap into.

firecrotch: For the LHRB setup I eliminated the foot pedal totally and have a Magura brake master cylinder with a custom made hose that goes directly to the rear brake caliper. This setup originally started out as a Husaberg hardparts LHRB kit from a Husaberg dealer. The angle on the lower hose fitting was at the wrong angle for the 2T Husky so I got a custom hose made up.

I put a second setup like this on my modified 1986 430AE (see my avatar) and discovered the kit no longer available. Mugura quit making the brake fluid compatible master so I am using a Brembo master, it is stronger that the Magura and a better setup.

For all this to be effective you have to give up the clutch lever, I love the auto clutch so that was no problem.

Cheers

I just put an M5B (rear) on my 300 for the hopefully wet winter months. Works great in mud and soft loam.

Which front tire did you pair that with? I rode the slop up in chalk bluff after the rains a few weeks ago and couldn't turn the AT81 I have now.

Hey Cosmo, I learned the hard way that trying to wheelie these bikes like a four stroke doesn't work. I'm on my third rear fender, lol... The Gnarly pipe, imo, is a worth while investment. It makes the
motor feel like a torque monster without giving up that top end hit. That and JD Jetts worked great for my 300. We should hook up, Chaulk Bluff ?
First ride on the JD kit yesterday. Transformed the power delivery from slap you in the face just a little beyond idle, to smooth transition to the pipe. Very good. Gnarly pipe next.

Would you buy a new old stock for 3730? It is a MY 12. I am tempted looking at the prices of the new bikes coming out, and it is pretty local to me so I can pick it up.

I bought my 2014 on 2Dec13 and have amassed 74 problem free hours since then. I tried to kill it at the dunes (undiscovered air leak) and it suffered no damage. I lost all coolant once on a cold winter ride and no damage. I've boiled it twice recently due to incorrect jetting for weather conditions. No damage. Keeps going. The new 2014 Husqvarna FE250 is on sale for 7650 so twice the price - and that's the cheapest new Husky you can purchase. Sure you get e start FI and possibly a better gearbox but you don't get the good woods grunt of the WR300. New bikes are only getting more expensive. You could always shop a used WR250 or WR300 as there's good deals on those too but for $3730 you get a new bike needing nothing but a jet kit and a reed valve gasket.

If you ride in groups of people on the trail that take tons of breaks during the ride the kickstart does get old but again it's still a half-price bike now. 11-14 are same bike.

Hey guys,

I am new to the site, and thinking about pulling the trigger on a leftover bike at a dealer (actually trading my street bike for it if they'll go for it.) This thread is a goldmine. I've been looking for every review I can find, and no doubt that the best info is coming from this site! Shrubitup, I am in Seattle as well, I've read a lot of your comments on the bike. Glad to hear you are making the stock carb work, I will plan to do the same. If I end up coming home with the new WR, I will probably try to pick your brain about your secret jetting recipe, haha. I hope to use the bike for local hare scrambles and enduros, and retiring my 450 EXC into dual-sport duty.

One question I have: Is the IMS tank available for the 2013? Sounds like most parts are interchangeable after 2011, but the websites seem to show that the tanks were only offered up to 2012. Any thing else to watch out for on a new bike that has been sitting for almost two years? It may not even have gas in it, hopefully not. The dealer says the warranty will still apply.

Cheers,

Forest

Yes IMS fits 11-14 bikes. Secret jetting is to follow JD's provided instructions for temp and elev. Runs great but not easiest starting bike tho I try and start mine sometimes 20x during a difficult trail ride due to breaks need to clear windfall with saw or user induced (me) stalls. If riding say mapped trails then there's much less stopping and starting. Wish bike would start reliably like my KX tho.

Thanks for the info. So is easier starting the main advantage to the Keihin PWK? I ride with a group that likes to stop a lot on the trail :/
I have a lot more reading to do before saturday...

Man Shrub-even before my lectron my 300 NEVER took 20 times. Garanteed it would be gone by now if it did. Half a dozen times maybe. Now with lectron 1-2 kicks when warm. 1-4/5 kicks when cold.
Wonder if its the newer ducati ignition or?

Once I tuned the stock Mikuni my 09 WR250 was a 1-3 kick bike but on 1st cold start I would lean the bike to the left until it peed gas out the overflow. Now that I have the Lectron tuned it's one kick 90% of the time cold or hot no leaning in gear or having to be in neutral. I can even give it a lazy half assed kick and it still will start more 1/2 of the time. It even restarts with one kick while one fingering the clutch slightly dragging.

Ha ha, no we stop and start typically 20X when clearing and building trails. So 20X roughly 3-4 kicks makes 60-80 total. Again, if not building trails and riding mapped cleared trails I am only kicking maybe 4X with 2-3 kicks so more like a 12 kick day. I need a trail work bike, lol.
