  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Magnificent 7

Those engines just plain look great. I know how much time you spent but is was worth it.

Talking to old vintage formula car owners at the Austin GP track say they keep there real old magnesium transmission cases new and preserved
by keeping air and moisture away from this metal. Darin these not only look great but will last a lifetime.

Did you put the KBS diamond clear on the 250 case ? What black did you use on the other ? Then clear on it?

Gary,
I use KBS rust seal in the crank webs. I bead blast, use their rust blast to clean oil out of surfaces, then use their Marine clean to remove any oils, etc..... The key to prevent bubbling is to use light coats. I sand between coats with 220 grit paper. I also use the Rust Seal on all bare areas of outer mag cases to seal of. I DA sand the cases to get chips scratches out of old. Sand small areas. If it gouge I fill in with JB marine weld and sand.
I use VHT Low Gloss on outer cases then heat cure. No clear. They look shiney cause I spray everything down with WD 40.
KBS has a new 2 part clear id like to try. Think it's called Xtreme.
The silver cases are DuPont base coat and DuPont urethane.
I'm thinking about trimming the 390 case on sprocket side to get rid of the flange that holds sprocket cover. Not sure if it will make case weak? But it would look like an 82 case when done. I just stick motor number on top of case around ignition. I may try a new coating on 390 cases in like a gold hew titanium color?

Here is this titanium color like to do 390 cases in:

Ignore the burgundy.

Here is an old 390 case I hacked up.

I'd clean rest of it up with a file and a sander.

Anyone on here have a good right side 390 center case?
I noticed after beed blasting mine that there is a crack in mine down on lower rear engine mount.
Want to hold off before welding it to see if I can find one?

Here what I'm talking about! Crack a doodle doo!

Roosters go Cock a doodle doo!

See where I found she was cracked along lower rear engine mount?

Also there is crack up by engine plate number.

No doubt they can be welded but I got something up my sleeve if these are a good set. Something special!

Looking good. Your attention to detail makes all the difference.

Thanx OBD! Yeah, I prob do a lot more, but I want these all to look like they popped off assembly line.
Also, it will save me time in the long run from going back and redoing things.

PM me about the 79 390 top end if it is at least cylinder and viable piston. I am not able to uy a new Wossner with every thing else that need be done first

Here is the color scheme I think I'm gonna go with on 390 engine.

Clear the cylinder but polish the side bands. Gold head to match black and gold tank.

Cases gonna be black with polished areas and gold highlights.
But I don't want to over do the Gold.

You kinda have to imagine the engine sitting in the frame.

Your thoughts?

Prob get at some point a PFR pipe for it.

Thanx,

Think I will tape off the band on head that keeps fins from rattling and keep those polished aluminum?

Here is Mossbarger reed cage for 390 after I polished it. Will get clear coated then.

Very nice work! Nice thread on you projects. Is this a oem reed valve assembly with mossbarger reed valves inside? I am asking because it looks to be the oem reed valve assembly.

Marty

Looks like oem with Mossbarger reeds. Thanx for compliment.

Here is final 390 cylinder head.

Now your thoughts? Highlighted webs and also fins.

Thought it would be good to pull some of the aluminum out to blend into the cylinder.

Maybe I call this thing gold digger?
