I broke my humorous(not very funny) back in 87....while racing my brand new 87 430....and it was up close to the ball...I didnt have to have a replacement or anything and they told me the same thing...I said screw that and it only made me more determined to race and ride sooner...good luck

Ditto to all the above! I'm recovering from seizing a bike over a 40' table top several months back. 11 Ti screws & plate and wicked bone bump in shoulder. Doc I went to was specialist in active sports so it helped but biggest issue is the boss- she's really freakin' mad (almost me or the bike mad).

Heal fast Frenchlayer & hopefully you can ride again (maybe trials?)

Too bad and time will tell ... I'm figuring I'll be a street rider only before age 60 with all my aches and pains ... You might have just speeded up the time when you can only ride on smooth trails ... Street riding is fun but very dangerous in a different way but not nearly as physical demanding ...

Just ride it out and see what happens ... Good luck ...

Agreed....there are two kinds of riders...those who have crashed...and those who are going to crash.....

In 06 I snapped a big chunk off my elliac crest(pelvis)....broke 5 ribs..punctured a lung..lacerated spleen, liver and esophagus....damaged lower aorta and lost kidney all in one go.....

Doc was mad and said dont ever ride again......but I begged to differ when they rolled a guy in beside me who passed away from a gunshot wound(gang related)

difference between doing stupid things and having an accident.....

you'll be OK Frenchlayer...be patient and give it time to heal

We all must rember the BMX racers motto ! AND don't forget our man
Evil Kenievel !! He wasn't supposed to ride again either. Doctors never give us permission to ride even when we're healthy. I'll bet you'll be back in the saddle some day. Like the saying goes... "All ya gotta do is WANT to bad enough" Hang in there and get well soon....

Thanks for all the well wishes folks! I really do appreciate it. I am over feeling sorry for myself and have changed my mental attitude on the whole thing.
The pain is still excruciating, but managed well by some oxycodone. I just don't want to end up getting hooked on that stuff. I am taking it less and dealing with the pain more, really using it to help me sleep. I have not had a good night sleep since the 2nd of July. I can only sleep sitting upright in a chair for now, so I am camping out in the den, kinda like indoor camping when I was a kid:). The wife still has to help me out a lot, without her I do not know how I could manage by myself, love that woman.
Surgery is scheduled for Thursday, hopefully the screws and plate will hold in the bone without it disintegrating, otherwise it is a prosthetic ball joint that will be on standby.
As for the chest protector, I am kinda new to the sport and thought those were only needed for hard core stuff, well I was wrong and admit it. Hopefully those that ride with me will take this as a clue to gear up more. I thought a good set of boots, helmet, goggles gloves and jersey/pants combo was enough.:excuseme:
I will keep y'all posted on the progress after I am back from surgery.

    Thank you.

Sounds good ... Nothing is written in cement and you'll have to ride it out ... a positive attitude will help a great deal here..

Becareful with that oxycodone ... I think that is what I was taking that gave me nightmares as vivid as reality when sleeping ... scary crap in my head big time ... I has in great pain with a broke leg and was loading up on it to kill the pain at night so I could sleep ... I quit taking it as I was afraid to go to sleep on it after a couple of nightmares about snakes and one about an intruder in my house ...

Tylenol is also very dangerous ...you can OD your kidneys (or liver ... one of these 4 sure) on it very easily in a single day ... So don't go eating a handful of it either ...

I wear the gear and I just don't go so hard unless the area where I might crash looks soft ... :)

Good luck on the recovery ...

French - I didn't mean to jab you about the chest protector so I hope you didn't take it wrong. We've all learned the hard way and I try to let the new guys know how important the little details can be. Again, stay positive and good luck on the surgery !

Good luck and heal up fast. You will be back on a bike, it's too much fun! Dress for the crash, not the ride. I know this well, but disregarded it on a hot day two weeks ago. I'm much luckier than you, but still nursing a badly bruised shoulder, that could have been avoided.
Again, good luck in surgery and heal fast!

Good luck with your surgery on Thursday, frenchlayer. And good for you for appreciating all your gal is doing for you right now:thumbsup: I've been injured numerous times on my dirt bikes and have gone through multiple surgeries as a result of those injuries. I shudder to think how I would have made it through all that without my All-Star husband around :)

Anyway, let us know how you're doing as soon as you're able, ok?

Best wishes to you frenchlayer! In the early days of a bad illness or injury doctors seem to give a worst-case scenario rather than fostering hope, so just try to stay focussed on the immediate goals and don't try to rush things.

As someone who's had a fair amount of scuffs over the past 27-odd years of fooling with bikes I'd like to recommend hitting the swimming pool as a therapy once you start to get properly mobile again. It's a great way of regaining strength and flexibility without putting strain on injured areas (the water supports your weight so you can put in as much or as little effort as you need).

Anyway, all the best for the surgery and beyond. :)

My advice is after surgery rehab asap. Do as much rehab at home as well everyday. I seriously shattered my left humerus, badly torn Rotator cuff and broke clean through distal radius and ulna with torn tendon on medial wrist. Basically it was 7+ months of hell and my surgeon told me most likely that I would never ride again or even work again. The only thing that worked at all was my pointer finger! I had zero ROM at wrist, elbow and shoulder!!! After my large surgical plate and 10 screws were installed onto humerus, I still had badly broken radius and ulna with a badly torn rotator cuff. Then my whole arm froze completely. I went to Phily and got 3 specialists one for wrist, one for elbow and one for shoulder........ They also said arm would not be too good afterwards.
Went crazy everyday working on arm 4-10 hours a day!!! Most days 10 Still had problems getting ROM back. Dynamic splints helped regain ROM after awhile.
8 weeks after surgery after hearing so much negativity and arm was pretty useless. I would put 2 compression stockings on arm to help with pain and blood pump and take pain meds and started riding again. At that point only my hand grip worked. I would use my right hand and lift the left arm and place it on bars and the arm would go for a free ride.... After several weeks of this little by little the arm came back. Accident was 1/27/08. Surgery was 2/4/08. Started riding in april. In may x-rays still showed arm shattered and surgeons told me if they took screws out arm would crumble and riding was absolutely rediculous. June 29th second surgery this time in shoulder. By august all surgeons could not believe how much use I had with arm etc.... Told them riding helped the most!! Do not give up or in to the medical profession.
I now know how amazing the body truly is and believe with hard work you will get through this with a amazing story as well!
Being I am a Chiropractor I always believed in the body... This experience has totally changed the way I recommend my patients as after care from the medical profession was sub par at best. If I followed their protocols, I could see why they were convinced that I would never have a useful arm again!
Thank god I am very stubborn and was driven to return to riding and my profession!!
Good luck and stay positive. Trust me it will not be easy but put the work in and you will be greatly rewarded!!
Today there is nothing my arm stops me from doing. I ride dirt bikes, quads, waverunners etc every weekend.

Here is what I know: I am 3 weeks into a separated shoulder(not even in the same ballpark as your predicament). My doc last Tuesday told me at that time that I needed to keep my arm in a sling and without load for at least another 3 weeks if not a month. So far I have worn the sling all of two days when I first injured the shoulder. I quit because it interfered with my work and pain is the price of rehab in my book. I spent two days this weekend riding and pushing the envelop and other than typical stiffness I have had no negative issues. I have spent the last two days at work returning to full use and pushing as much as possible short of extreme sharp pain. I have only limited reduction in ROM and will continue to push the envelope with a full return to aggressive riding in a week and a half as the goal. I only have a short time to live and I refuse to be limited by anything short of the coming reality of end of life.

Keep the faith, you will ride again and will only be limited by your own goals. Shoot high and persevere, my thoughts are with you.
