I was trying to work out in my head what the actual, not theoretical top speed would be......

I don't think a 17 will be on my shopping list! As you mentioned, a 15 would most likely be ideal for the type of riding I hope to be doing, and an optional 14 for the slower/tighter rides.

may be an aussie special. in order to pass ADR regs, they used to gear the bikes to the moon so they were only doing 500 rpm when they passed the noise meter.

they were available at the dealer in the day, desert racing or hare and hound if you will
definitely for open terrain, I have one but rarely use it, mainly ride in the trees
that said I run 15 on the front 52 on the back and the torque carries me down to a near crawl speed

Has anyone here had dealings with Andre Horvath from Austria? Are they reputable? I am having some issues with an order I received and I'm not getting a response from them.
I'm entirely sure it is not their fault too, the complete engine gasket kit (Athena) that I received does not have a head gasket, I found that kind of odd given Athena's description of "complete gasket kit" but after a couple of emails, I am not getting any answers from them.

not good at all..a response at least is needed if you are going to run a business. of course something could have happened but i guess youll see. are you protected at all, like thru paypal or anything for this?

True, I had hoped for a response by now, I will wait and see if anything comes of the second email.
I don't think Paypal offer protection for non Ebay purchases, does that sound right? Anyway, that is a last resort, I'll give them ample opportunity before going down that path.
Has anyone else bought the Athena gasket kit? If so was the head gasket included?

For what its worth I bought an Athena "complete" gasket set about 5yrs ago for an 88 YZ250 and it was complete except for a head gasket:confused: (two O rings on this model) Even with cars in the UK you have to double check that a head gasket is included and that is with a top end set!

I bought several items from them a couple of weeks ago and also had a query on one of the parts. Got back to me next day with the answer and the complete package arrived within 3 days. Very professional I thought.
It wasn't a gasket set so cannot answer your query but it seems strange that they haven't replied.

Thanks for the reply husqyman, as ridiculous as it sounds calling it a complete gasket kit, I hoped that it may not be the way they are supplied, but if they are only all gaskets except the head gasket then I guess I will just buy a head gasket, would be nice to get an answer from the supplier though.

Thanks and good to hear Autopilot, the strange part about this story is that I questioned them prior to purchasing about the 430 head gasket fitting the 400 and they were quick to respond, the correspondence went:

Hi, I have several items in my cart, one of them is a gasket kit for a Husqvarna 430,450,490 and 500.
I have a 1988 Husqvarna 400WR, do you know if this kit will be suitable without lowering compression too much? If so, do you have a kit to suit my bike?
    Regards, Tony Brown.

Hello, yes it fits too because lower end is all the same. Best Regards, Andre Horvath

Thanks for your fast reply, I was concerned using the 430 head gasket in a 400 could cause issues since the parts book shows a different part number, do you sell the 400 set or 400 head gasket?
    Regards, Tony Brown.

sorry we do not have the head gasket separately. Best Regards
    Andre

So the seller obviously didn't know that there was no head gasket included in the set either or he would have said so from the beginning, this is why I believe it is not the seller's fault. If they could just answer my emails I wouldn't have to ask people about their reputation, but thank you for your feedback, good to know they are professional.

Back to the gearing question for a moment:
As another as yet experienced 86 400 LC owner: what's the redline on that 400 LC Enduro motor?

don't know if it's been covered but the 400 and 430 head gaskets fit their respective bores and too much extra space or lack of will affect the compression

Well I have received a response from Andre, he is trying to find a gasket that he can send to me at no charge which is a very noble gesture if he can, I am prepared to contribute so that he is not out of pocket for the correct gasket.

My initial thoughts were that it was not the seller's fault, and he admits that he didn't know that it was not included, and then says that most gasket kits are supplied this way?
It's the first gasket set I have ever bought that does not include a head gasket, but I have only been buying gasket kits for the past 42 years!

Anyway, it will be great to report that Andre Horvath is a quality seller if this takes place.

All too often these days sellers use generic photos for their goods and expect us to trust them that what is stated is what we receive, whereas Andre has shown the actual gasket kit and it does not show a head gasket so I guess I have to take some responsibility in not checking the image properly. I'll keep you posted.

As far as Bodger's gearing question is concerned, I have never attached a tach to my two strokes, I just know/feel when they are ready to change gear or are revving too high for my liking, whether that be shifting up gears or cruising in top gear, sorry I can't be more help with this.

"Some" would say about 500 rpm below destruction point, not sure I would like to find out how hard it has to rev to do that! :)
