  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

I recently went on a week long vacation. Many higher speed dual sport rides, as well as my bike getting a little warm.

On the left side of the engine, near the top, a light film of dirt collected all around a protruding part of the engine, I would guess water/coolant related??? I rode many. many miles of high speed riding. Also, my boyfriend and i were cleaning my air filter and the black connector piece (he calls it the boot?) had a little oil in it?

The water and oil levels werent off, so should I just chalk it up to many miles without a cleaning?? I want to make sure my girl is safe and in top notch for Memorial Day Weeekend!!
 
The waterpump covers weep ever so slightly on the TE's and you will get a little oil in the airbox boot and a whole lot if you fall over on the righthand side of the machine.

LOL! Yep, I did fall on the right side!! I was told this about the oil. But the water part, still worried me. Thanks for your advise Dirtdame!

Is my bike ok? For a standard weekend of trail riding that is?
 
I tried to quote the individual post in danbartol's thread. I couldn't figure it out. Sorry. Post #232 has excellent pics of the hi-flo water pump. Sure you bike is fine for the hardest/hottest days of riding. Does your bike have the rad fan and catch tank? In WA your bike may never get hot. Here in CA we get a few 100*f+ days a year and stuff can get hot. The special parts catalog shows it for the '08 and newer, but yours is the same fitment. I think Husky made the hi-flo for the '11 630's. I have not had my 630 pump opened up, but the housing looks exactly the same. Anyway, just letting you know the upgrade option.
 
How do know your bike got warm, did it boil over?

Where the dirt collected, with out seeing pics, it's probably on the top of the LT side which is the water pump. Engine oil can seep from the 3 bolts that hold on the water pump which makes the dirt collect. It's typical for Huskys and not really a big deal. Mine weeped and collected dirt a whole summer before I fixed it during my winter tear down. My chain tensioner on the same side but about mid motor height did the same. My fix was to remove one bolt at a time, clean the bolts threads(to get proper torq when reinstalling). Clean the cover and area that has the dirt/oil, spin the bolt almost all the way in. When the bolt was about 1/8" from touching the cover, I applied clear silicone around it and then tightened it to torq spec. Then cleaned up any excess silicone. I've put about 20hrs on since and it hasn't leaked or collected any dirt at all. BTY, regular clear silicone is good up to well over 200 F, so heat shouldn't be any issue.
 
The waterpumps seep on most of the husky bigblock 4t's built between '03 and '10. They seep a whisper of coolant(probably steam) - just enough to catch dust. Checking the torque on the bolts and loctiting(blue) them helps.(loctiting also seals the threads and prevents any oil from seeping as pointed out in the post above)
Other than that, it's nothing to worry about. Both my bikes have been that way for years.
Occasionally the o-ring in the waterpump may go south, which will cause a noticeable leak. I've only seen that happen once on a 450.........
