  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TO PCV OR NOT TO PCV THAT IS THE QUESTION

Well I have taken the plunge and bought a JD FI TUNER. Would I be presumptuous to assume I can place my to BF back in...

I'm currently using a PCV but have used the JD Tuner before. I stated this before and I'll say it again the most noticeable power increase that I've experienced was after installing the JD Tuner. The only reason I switched
to the PCV was because I couldn't get rid of the flame out issues. It's definitely a nice and more economical mod with a nice power gain.
Do you have the top BF still in.

Outside of cafe husky. road racing, harley davidsons, drag racers, street racers, etc, the powercommander
Is the most successfully used tuner period. Has been for a long time. Used correctly it can solve most fueling,
Timing, accel, starting issues. It requires more than plugging it in, especially on our bikes because most of us
Are looking for low end fueling and most of the maps available are for mid/top end power. With some reading and
Trial and error or dyno time, it can overcome most holes in mapping because of it infinite tunability.
I know some have had success with the JD, but it pales in comparison to the features of PCV.
Just about every motorcycle produced in the U.S. is EPA lean, choked by catylitic converters, with fueling and
Ignition timing to appease the goverment regulations. Any bike with a properly set PCV, will make more horsepower,
and generally run better, than one without.

Yes, at this point I haven't done the BF mod. For now, my 511 is running flawless. The power is the best it's ever been and I'm content with
the performance. I really think the Auto Tune has made all the difference in the world because it feels like it's getting better and better with every
ride. Also the fact that I'm learning how to use it better. I rode it for quite a while without saving the trims and sending the new map to the PCV.
Now that I've done that the past few rides it just flat out rips. I love it.:D

If you like your 450/477 to go like one, pull it out.
Now you have a tuner as well you should be able to adjust the mapping & have it ripping through the lower & mid ranges.
The PCV does have more to offer spec wise, if I get bored with my own mods, that'll be what I fit.
For our areas here, better suspension setup will make the bike faster after curing the tuning faults.

Don't bother. See Kelly's threads on the subject. Also, I have a JD with Map #3, butterfly out. Best the bike has ever run. Quite content at this point. I see no reason to put the BF back in.

Well I bit the bullet and installed a JD TUNER power surge x6, the first thing I notice was the power increase.. not too shabby at all. The next thing I noticed was my fuel.consumption... ouch... Dead dry in 100klms. 104 to be exact, not too good... Has any one got some settings in Oz that works pretty good for power/economy.. and will I be able to put my butterfly back now...!!!

You can put the butterfly back in anytime i guess.
Depends if you want it to pull like a 450 down low or not, Entierly your choice.:)

Personally, if I wanted my bike to ride like a 250 down low & mid range, I would have bought a 250....
None of the tuner boxes control the second fly-by-wire throttle, so it will do exactly as it was programmed to do ex-factory & limit power in the low & mid ranges.
You will be able to make small improvements by trimming maps there, but ultimately will be held back by how much the FBW throttle will open.

Shoot Kelly a message for set-up of the JD - http://www.cafehusky.com/members/motosportz.3/

I'm running the JD + BF removed + Map #3. These are the JD settings I use that have my bike running the best it has run:
G - 2.5
Y - 1
R - 2
G/B - 2.5
Y/B - 4.5
R/B - 4.5

I have my Brass Screw at about 2 1/2 - 3 turns out. Just enough to get the idle (warmed up engine idle) slightly higher, but no more. I run Torco Octane booster + Startron in every tank. And I have noticed that these bike are very dependent on a clean - lightly oiled - air filter. To the point where I clean it every 2 - 3 rides dirty or not.

Thanx Cosmo, what type of economy do you get.. I was a bit amazed how much more fuel.mine sucked up...I wasn't riding any faster I know that ****************************************!! Lol

I don't believe that Jerry's 511 absolutely requires the butterfly mod to go like a 450, his system is higher flowing / has the pcv and may very well go better than yours. I was very capable of 61bhp with the butterfly in. Granted I have an extremely high flowing intake/exhaust, removing the butterfly was an absolute nightmare for me. Now with the TC tbi in and my new experimental early model TC450 ecu + pcv I am able to completely decimate the new factory race bikes.

Yea, even before the JD I was a bit surprised at the dirt riding fuel consumption. I have not calculated it out yet. But I remember one ride before I put in the JD where I was down to the point where the fuel light came on on the dash after about 45 miles or less of riding. I'm guessing I was getting about 22 (+/- 5) MPG. Now with the JD, I haven't noticed much difference, but my rides have been shorter so it's hard to say.

Ha ha, when I messaged you last year about the possibility of fitting a different ECU you told me it couldn't be done :)
(And do I understand you had no idea if I was mechanical or not etc.)
Maybe what you should have said was 'It would be difficult to do' :)
So I set off on fixing what was there...great to hear it's working for you, sounds great.

As for the power, they do still make great top end power with the butterfly in, just not running to potential everywhere else.
Point is, you don't have to open up the motor to improve bottom & mid where most enduro riding is done....

I must of misunderstood what you were asking me at the time because I have always had multiple ecu's for testing. As for the butterfly, it only improves throttle response and does not improve hp anywhere along the power band. When the dual butterfly system is working properly, the engine performs to it's potential everywhere. Nick and Ty raced a stock TXC511, with both butterflies and won, repetitively. They didn't start removing the butterflies until Cory started winning on the TC.

PCV will definately work wonders for the tuning, so will ditching the butterfly, it is surplus to the needs of the engine.

Yeah I was thinking the same thing..I will persist with the X6 and try find the sweet spot. It's all a learning curve...
