  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE449 Ridden Hard review

Agreed. The JD certainly has its place in an effort squeeze everything out of the engine, especially if you've opened up the front and back significantly. I only suggest that valuable gains can still be had by the casual rider through modest investment. The trick with the FMF slip on, as previously stated, is to recork the flow a bit with the quiet insert, to avoid the need for a JD. That's my experience, anyway.

My intent was to let readers know that titanium headers and exhausts, combined with aftermarket fuel mapping devices are certainly cool and all, but not entirely necessary to wake the bike up a bit and shed some pounds.

I have the PC4 on my 511, I also have the quiet insert sitting around waiting to be installed. It didn't come with any instructions, do I need to drill out the rivets or does it install on the other side of the muffler, where the mid pipe comes in (where there are allen bolts, I'm hoping that it's this side)?

Look in the the exhaust hole. Just inside on the bottom of the hole is a screw - mine was an allen head. Remove the screw and the spark arrestor pulls out. Slip the quiet core in and replace the screw. Pretty easy.

Yeah I've been researching around and have found nothing. Ive had special tips turned up by Hammerhead designs before so will be interesting to see if they come up with a replacement lever for the 449/511.
The standard gear and brake lever to me are poorly designed and very flimsy. The amount of times I've had to straighten my brake lever from grabbing a vine etc.
Ill do some ringing around to mainmoto and Hammerhead to see if its in the works, I might be able to push a template onto the system as I know that a fair few blokes WOULD purchase if it was available.

Top looking bike. Don't mean to come across rude just wondering roundabouts pricing on the whole system as you are also in Australia. Trying to toss up between the FMF system with powerbomb header or the system you have on your bike.
I would be def interested in replacment items brake and gear levers!

Cant remember the price, was around 900-1000 from trooper lu's! i bought a whole heap of other stuff at the same time so i cant recall.
Im thinking of turning my stock akro into a shorty muffler for the tard track!

Aww crap looks like I bought the wrong insert then... Thanks for your response!

Any news on the aftermarket gear shifter leavers?
I just had to replace mine, because it chewed out the spline.
$130 for OEM is stupidly Ridiculaus! But i needed it

Great looking graphics set on your bike! Where can I buy one too???

Rob

Full Ti Akro system with power commander5 = Awsomeness..
Opens these babies right up, real smooth power delivery.
And yes the standard akro system is very restrictive compared to my new one.

So ive been searching around for reviews on the TE449 but most reviews are of when the bikes are relatively new and hardly ridden.
Just to start I have had the pleasure of owning my 2011 TE449 for about 10 months now and coming from a racing background I can assure you this bike has been put through hell. I have made many modfications and upgrades and ridden just about every terrain I can think of, so thought I would share my opinion of this bike.
Modifications and upgrades:
The 3 piece 2011 rear guard is just plain s#!t. Its flimsy and over time is ugly as hell. Ive put the new 2012 single piece slimmer guard with 2012 inner guard which mounts ALOT stronger. Both these guards bolt straight on with no modifications.
The magura bars, great bend but relatively weak. Replaced with pro taper contours, pillow top grips.
The gear lever tip wears very fast so replaced with hammerhead offset tip for size 11 boot. I modified my gear lever for it to fit as i didnt want to use the old spring.
Its an ugly bike without graphics and annoying to keep clean. Full race graphics kit from Ringmaster Images here in Australia. RHK gold anodized bar ends, Brake and clutch master cover and fork bleeders.
I've rewired most power/earth wires as they run too close to moving parts for my piece of mind.
Stomp pad on brake lever is flimsy replaced with bolt on Thumpstar billet end.
These are a few things that i found should have been standard in the first place.
I have ridden this bike on very rocky, hard pack dirt, very muddy, gravel, sand (stockton beach). Its been ridden on supercross tracks, enduro X and motorcross tracks.
Pros:
The back end of this bike once dialed right with preload compresion and rebound, is incredible. I have never ridden a bike that drives so straight and puts so much power to the ground.
The smooth power delivery from the engine helps alot in steeper rocky terrains and tight single track. It could be snappier for rock hops and log hops but i heard this can be fixed with a JD tuner and the accelerator pump function(iridium spark plug rids of dreadful flameouts too).
The ergos can be a little tedious to set up as this bike is very different in how its balanced but once set up right its a very sharp plush ride, I found relatively nimble for the weight.
Cons:
WAY too many electrics. A few days of water crossings and muddy terrain sees this bike for a full strip down and clean of every plug and check of every wire. I have had relays go faulty (most electrical problems ive found go back to either a faulty relay or wire earthed).
Akro dents easily due to no cover. Its an expensive slip on to replace so who wants it dented up?
I own BMWs as cars and I KNOW its their doing, putting bolts and screws in the most annoying places possible. Eg the gear lever is ridiculous to get off and on as the frame nearly completely covers the bolt. ALOT of time and patience when working on this bike.
Gearing is hopeless from standard unless going to ride on the road. A 14T or 13T front sprocket does the world of difference.
Flimsy chain stay near rear sprocket. Who really makes a plastic chain guide? replaced with 2010 TC450 alloy one.
Bolts come loose, when i bought the bike i heard of this so went over and locktite every bolt known for wiggling loose and yeah still happend so CHECK your bike after every ride.
Regena chain is S#!T replaced with Renthal R3 chain.
All in all this bike is incredible and would not hesitate to buy over any other bike of the market again! This is a confidence inspiring bike as its very plush and predictable. Its a heavy bike to throw around a supercross track but thats not what its built for so did very well i thought.
Bikes ive ridden and raced: 2012 6 days KTM 300 exc, RMZ450, KTM500exc, RM250, 2011 WRF450, 2011 CRF450x
I would choose the TE449 over any of these bikes. As an enduro bike of course.

Mate, I agreed with almost all of your post for sure.
The TE449 is an awesome bike once the substandard EFI tuning is sorted.
I had an '05 WR450 for 3 or 4 years & was all keen to stump up cash for a new one when they went EFI.
I test rode them at two different ride days, some standard, some with pipes & tuning and ....... they rode exactly the same as my well set up '05!!!
I rode the TE449 & what a revolution, stable, fast, roomy to get around the bike & rear traction in abundance!

Then the love-hate started with the flame-outs, hanging idle & hard restarts. I was sooooo close to ditching the bike, but could not think of something else I'd like to ride more (Not fond of the KTM 2st or 4st, Bergs are very similar, WR still the same as it was,CRF hasn't changed in 5 or 6 years...) So I set myself the task of fixing my EFI problems, but I didn't want to pour any more money into it.

I'm in love with it again all over :D
I have 115hrs of hard riding on it & it bounces back for more.
The new snap from mid-range catches all the other bikes I ride with by surprise & it keeps pulling up top as well.
I'm about to give it a 'birthday' & renew the plastics (+ 2 piece rear guard)& graphics & it'll be my 'New' bike for a while yet!!

(For my bike - I've had a great run from the original chain in mud, dirt & sand- I liked the original colours [although I'm gonig white] - my chain guide has taken a few hits & is ok- I submerged my bike in a creek then rode a full ride & cleaned the electrics when I got home- the Akro is bent in two spots despite having the special parts guard)

I'd buy it again too, for sure!!!
