  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

From this forum I think I have read that if you switch to a 12 tooth front sprocket, your chain chews into the swingarm. And I also remember reading that if you go up to a 14 tooth, the front sprocket chew into something else on the engine/trans. Is this correct information? If anyone in the know could clear this up I would appreciate it.

It won't chew into the swingarms, but you will need to change your slider out more frequently with a 12. It doesn't look to me like there is enough clearance with a 14. I may be wrong. 13/50 works good. What are you running now?

13/50 works good for offroad only (or very minimal street riding), its the factory recommended race final drive ratio

I'm running the stock 13/40 gearing. Bad for dirt and street. On the street, first gear is so high that it's easy to stall the bike (if you don't slip the clutch just right) leaving you vulnerable to being rear ended. Then, after it stalls, when you go for the starter button, you can't hear it crank since your wearing ear plugs cuz the bike is so dang loud .(And being an X-lite, it probably isn't cranking anyway!) So I end up jumping off quickly and pushing the bike to the side of the road and trying to start it there.

I run 13/50 on mine and honestly it is just fine around town. I would not want to ride it on the highway, but 35-45 in town is just fine, as are short bursts to 50 or 55.

Hey, where's the hot ticket place to buy a chain and sprockets? I want ones that are good quality (B+) yet good value to boot. What brand and model chain is darn good but not priced over the top? Same with sprockets.

Lol seems you have a few things to address.....

Just for the moment, you cannot beat the deal that Hall's has going on Regina 520 o-ring (112 links only) which is the stock chain on some models: $49.99 ...weirdly, all other shorter and longer lengths of the same chain were over $100. Regina is a good, solid chain.

In the same vein, they are offering a 51 tooth SuperSprox sprocket for $29.99 but it's an aluminum one. Still, it's a great deal (other smaller or larger sizes are $70+!)

I'm running a Renthal 12t counter, which puts me at 12-51, and still 1st gear is not quite low enough... but it's close (2nd is useless with any final ratio, IMNSHO). I like a trials-type 1st. Sixth is good for a causal 37mph (~5000rpms) and according to the sprocket commander website I'll top out at 93mph when I hit the rev-limiter (edit: Gearing Commander said a 13K rev limit, but now I don't think it's that high... maybe 11K? 78mph?). yeah, r-i-i-i-i-i-i-ght. (And I imagine the motor will grenade in the half hour it takes to get up that high).

Those Italian (or was it Bavarian?) engineers who were so proud to squeeze a 6th gear in this thing really blew it. I know I am beating a dead horse here, but this tranny is terrible.... ratio-wise.

If anyone ever comes up with an overdrive 6th gear set, I am totally in. Hell, I'd go with a 5 speed if I could have a lower first and a higher 5th. This motor could easily pull it- because, wow, is it strong. Maybe Shineray will come up with something- my fingers are crossed. Except for this issue, I think this bike (TE 310 family) is fantastic.

And jump on that chain and sprocket deal- it's been around for about a month and I doubt it'll last. I told some friends about it, but they were pretty nonchalant about it :excuseme:

At last - someone else who thinks like I do!!
I want a lower 1st and a higher 6th
I'm currently running 12/50 which is not too bad.

Getting a little concerned with the chain rubbing on the swinging arm, so I'm changing to a 13/53. A little higher, but I'll give it a go

However, when I did take the chain off and have a look at the slider, there is no cause for concern.
The pictures compare the old and new slider, with the old one having done around 1300 miles, half of that with a 12 tooth gearbox sprocket.

Note the KTM sticker on the parts label!

What hasn't lasted well is the 12 tooth sprocket itself - it is absolutely goosed!!
The rear one is good enough for another couple of thousand miles if I wanted.

Thanks for all the suggestions of places to buy sprockets, chains, etc. I ended up discovering sprocket center before any of the recommendations came in.
Got a 110 link RK X-ring chain, a JT 46 tooth steel sprocket (I didn't want to spend a lot as I'm just "trying out" the 46 tooth sprocket) and an AFAM 12 tooth front sprocket and 2 clip type master links in gold so I can keep an eye on them. The JT sprocket seems to be of pretty high quality--I'm impressed. They're offering 10% off until the end of the year. The total bill was $150.00 and shipping was "free". But nothing is really free...

Being that the TE310 is an enduro race bike with a plate, the ratios are probably just what they need to be. In any other conditions, other than woods racing, the ratios are WAY wrong. I sure wish they would have offered a wide ratio trans as an option. It would be so much better in the desert, on the highway and on cow trails. Makes the bike not very useful where I live.

A lot of national endure titles were won on bikes with wide ratio transmissions. The ratios on my old 250 OR were awesome. Close ratio on the bottom, and wide ratio on the top.
