  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE310 Valve clearances

reveille

Husqvarna
Pro Class
So I have a 2012 TE310 with 47 hours and 1200 miles on the clock. First valve check last night and they are all just out of spec on the loose side. The measurements are as follows: Left exhaust is at .285mm/.011 inches. Right exhaust is .305mm/.012 inches. Left intake is .18mm/.007 inches and the right intake is .16mm/.006 inches. Pretty much all of these are just out of spec and I have been feeling a slight loss of power off idle with some top end noise. I don't have shims so I guess I will be taking it in to the shop to have the valves adjusted. So is it normal to have all the valves out of spec with 47 hours like this? I know we should disregard most everything salesmen tell us, but every dealer I have spoke with brags about the Husky valves holding spec very well. Maybe I am just lucky...?

(different engine) Mine got loose for many of the first checks, then they stopped moving. I don't remember a time when they ever tightened.

If I bought a set of shims is adjusting the valves manageable for a noob to this process? I have the shop manual to reference but my other bikes have always been tappets so shims are new to my limited experience...

You need shims, caliper or micrometer and a good inch pound torque wrench. Its very easy to do. You just need to be super careful when torquing the cam caps. They strip very easily.

47 hours is great. That is probably where they were set from the factory. If it was mine and they were just out of tolerance on the loose side I would run it. Usually the clearances get tighter as the valve face and seat wear, tight clearance will cause more issues than loose clearance. Run it.

Yep. run it like Jakes says. Bet that about where they were set from the factory. Also the exhaust valve will almost never move as they are smaller and lighter.

They get tighter because they recede into the head as the valve face wears out on the hardened seat. These do seem to last a VERY long time as you dealer said.

Thank you guys for the comments. I took the bike to Halls last night so I will let them make any necessary adjustments this time. My warranty is still good so I wanted them to give the whole bike a once over to look for any issues prior to the warranty ending. In the future I will handle any issues myself. After removing the fuel tank and checking the valves I was surprised at how easy it actually was.

Got the bike back from Halls and they shimmed 2 of the valves, not sure intake or exhaust. It seems like the upper engine noise I was hearing is gone now. They also fixed a small oil leak under warranty. It was the stator wire seal at the case. Hare scramble this Saturday and the bike is ready to roll:thumbsup:
