  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

First off, I only ride single-track mountain terrain, so please ignore if you are interested in other setups.

I bought the bike new in November with 0 miles and immediately put on the JD tuner. It helped alot with the low end bog. However, it was never really responsive enough, so I put in the 12 port Kawasaki injector. This helped a ton, but you have these weird pulsations when riding steady in low rpm. You notice this mostly on the street. I think this is why you really need the 2012 txc ecu. That said, I would still do the 12 port w/jd over nothing. I actually ordered the ECU and will put it in next week. Also, when I took out the 4 port injector, 3 of the holes were gummed up. The likely cause is ethanol gas. So now I only put the non-oxygenated clear gas in it, but it's hard to find.

One thing that has really helped with the low-end issue is to put on a 12t front sprocket and the 50t rear. With this gearing it idles at 4 mph and you engine brake down steep hills at 6mph. I think it is the perfect setup for single-track if you are not a fast rider. Top speed is right around 65mph with this gearing. On most of trails I ride in 2nd or 3rd, I like having 1st available for really bad sections.

The other items I have put on the bike are Cycra handguards and a Ricochet skid plate. The front suspension is about 1/8" off max low on the brackets and the preload is set to about 1" of threads still showing. I am only 5'9", so this works about perfect for me. I don't worry too much about the ground clearance as that Ricochet skid plate is like a tank.

I have left the stock Karoo tires on and am actually impressed with their performance. They absorb shock pretty well and provided plenty of traction over many roots, logs, and much steep terrain.

The other riders were riding both trannys of the KTM 300 2t and the KTM 450 4t mx. The husky has no problem tackling narly steep stuff and I easily kept up on the steep sections with no problems. After riding the 2t and 4t ktms, I can say the Husky does single-track with a lot more finesse and comfort. You can tell the bike is really in it's element. The 450 was especially tiring, felt like I was trying to control a rocket, I was happy to give it back. The 300 2t just doesn't have that low-end grunt like the Husky, but I think they would be a lot of fun if I were a faster rider.

I guess my point is that the TE310 is good bike for any class of rider for single-track riding. The only drawbacks are that it is bit high and it is liquid cooled. It is pretty easy to knock a rad hose off if you fall in some branches. Both issues can be fixed by being a better rider.

I also wanted to put a plug in for the Gaerne Balanced Oiled Boot. Wow they are super comfortable, yes you give up a little bit of protection, but I'm not riding MX. Even after a 4hr ride, I had no desire to take them off. I can't say the same about any other boot I have worn.

I switched the battery to the SHORAI LITHIUM-IRON BATTERY (LFX-14L2-BS12), purchased from BRP http://www.brpmoto.com/ I think this saves a couple pounds, seems to work fine, no issues.

For fuel I am mixing 1 gallon race gas 111 octane leaded to 4 gallons 88 octane non-oxygenated clear.

Also, I have never used a Rekluse, but with the 12t 50t gearing, you rarely have stalling issues. Plus you retain your engine braking and have like $800 towards other mods. If you want to go even slower, I could easily see going with 12t 51t. With 12t 50t on a slighty inclined grass area, it will idle at 4 mph without stalling.

Like you I prefer ST and the 450's were too big for me. The 310 is brilliant especially down gnarly gullies. The high comp gives it massive engine braking which means little need for a lot of braking (unlike smokers).
I just went up one tooth on the rear sprocket, just enough to hold 2nd and 3rd that wee bit longer.
Very happy with the bike.

Very interesting about the gearing. I'll need to give that a try because that is a minor annoyance of mine right now.

RENTHAL SPROCKET FRONT TC250 12 479-520-12GP is the one you want. It was like 24.75 dollars shipped from "riders needs" on Amazon. I'd order from the same place as a different shop on Amazon, sent me the 13t in a 12t package. For me it was the single greatest improvement in terms of rideability. The other nice thing about the te310 is that it revs forever, so even if you gear it too low, it still has lots of rpm headroom.

Same goes for the gearingon the TE511, 13-51t and is the best trailbike I have ever had ! About 65 mph top speed and managing the clutch makes me think why would anyone need the recluse ! Not a rekluse fan but have seen them make regular trail riders into black diamond hero's ha ha I can idle up my street curb up onto my lawn into the garage !
