  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

I AM SAD THAT I HAD TO FIND THIS WEB COMMUNITY WHEN I HAVE A PROBLEM. IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO BE THE GUY THAT COULD SAY. I HAVE BEEN RIDING FOR YEARS WITH NO PROBLEMS.

INSTEAD I HAVE HAD 1000 MILES OF CARE FREE SUPERMOTO FUN.

SITUATION I HAVE:

SO. I RODE FROM SEALEVEL UP TO ABOUT 3000 FT UP HALAAKALA, MAUI. ( IRRELEVANT TO THE SITUATION I THINK)

WHEN I GOT UP THERE AND CAME TO A STOP. BEFORE I KILLED THE ENGINE. ( I USUALLY KILL IT WITH THE BUTTON BEFORE I TURN THE KEY OFF, LIKE THE MANUAL SAID) I HEARD AN EXTRA BIT OF NOISE.

THOUGHT LITTLE OF IT AND TALKED A WHILE THEN DECIDED TO LEAVE. WHEN I STARTED DOWN THE DRIVEWAY THE BIKE SUDDENLY TURNED OFF, I LOOKED AT MY DASH AND THE BIKE STARTED ITSELF UP AGAIN! DANGEROUS DRIVEWAY WITH NOWHEAR TO STOP SO I KEPT GOING. I WENT DOWN TO A SAFE PLACE TO PULL OUT AND THE BIKE WAS RUNNING A BIT ROUGH.

KEY INFO:
I KILLED THE ENGINE WITH THE KILL BUTTON, WHEN I RELEASED THE KILL SWITCH THE BIKE STARTED ITSELF UP AGAIN.

I WAS IN THE MIDDLE OF NOWHEAR SO I DECIDED TO BEE LINE HOME. MORE ROUGH RUNNING AND SEEMED LIKE A LITTLE EXTRA NOISE. I CAME TO A RED LIGHT AND IT FELT LIKE THE STARTER WAS TRYING TO KICK OVER. I WAS CLOSE TO HOME SO I KEPT GOING.

I GOT HOME. CAME TO A PROPER STOP, TURNED BIKE OFF. I WENT THROUGH THE START AND STOP WITH THE KILL BUTTON TO SEE IF IT WAS ACTING WEIRD AND IT DIDNT DO THE START ITSELF THING WHEN I RELEASED THE KILL SWITCH.

CONCLUSION: I HAVE NEVER FORGOTTEN THE KEY ON BEFORE. I GO TO CHECK OUT THE BIKE LATER AND IS ACTING LIKE A DEAD BATTERY.

THIS MORNING I GET A GOOD QUALITY BATTERY CHARGER AND THE BATTERY WASNT COMPLETLY CHARGED AFTER 5 HOURS.

I PUT IT IN AND THE DASH STARTS UP BUT I DO NOT HEAR THE EFI PUMP PRIME AND BIKE IS RESPONDING LIKE THE KILL SWITCH IS ON.

SO WHAT DO YOU GUYS THINK?

sounds like a short in the key switch or the on off button that caused your starter to be engaged while bike was running?

Thank you for the reply Ben,

well. I charged the hell out of the battery, put it in. and presto! fired up first try.

I had cleaned and shot with triflow. the start button and kill switch. didn't look like any corrosion. I am going to start drying it off with a leafblower after washing to reduce the chance of water siting anywhere.

I just moved down next to the beach and this is the first two weeks of the bike sleeping outside. i am going to be verry careful about letting corrosion build up.

Yeah, cool! I always cover with a plastic bag and tape off all switches and any electrics behind the number plate when I wash mine.

My electrical problem is back.

The battery being dead must have been my own damb fault. The ignition sticking is the real problem.

Its hit and miss. but it is sticking. weather i shut off with the kill button or the key. When i turn the key or release the kill button it fires right up!

I called a dealer in honolulu and they said they could have the start/ kill switch in about 4 weeks.

I went through and unplugged/ wiggled all electrical components. Didnt see anything obviously corroded.

Has anyone tryed the diagnosis software for these models?

Other than that I start replacing one thing at a time I guess. The remote electric start switch sounds kind of suspicious to me.

When I bought my 07 TE450 brand new, all worked quite nicely for about 5 or 6 months. Then in the middle of an offroad ride in the desert. I shut the bike off on a hillside. When I pushed the on button (not the starter button, but the equivalent of turning on the key) the starter began to turn the engine over. I pressed the on button again (to the off position), but it did not stop the starter from turning the engine over. I sort of panicked and tried to kill the situation by putting the bike in gear and letting the clutch out with the brakes applied. It was a stupid move that damaged the starter clutch, but it stopped it. I then managed to start the bike by kickstarting it and rode it home. At home, I turned the ignition circuit on again, and the bike began to turn over again. This time, I disconnected the battery. I thought that it was a bad starter solenoid or something. Since I dislike troubleshooting electrical problems of that nature, I took the bike to the dealer. They repaired the starter clutch thingie, but didn't find anything else wrong. It wouldn't do it for them. It's been 5 years now, and it has never repeated that malfunction.:excuseme:

I would be a liar if i wasnt hoping this would go away.

Between work and the non availability of husky parts i am playing the patience game.

I had an old chevy van with starter solinoid problems kinda like this. It made my van jump a curb and almost go down a cliff! That is a good suggestion.

The remote electric start switch sounds kind of suspicious to me.

Definitely suspect!

posted this in another ongoing thread that is similar....
seems your starter relay could be stuck "ON" which would be the same as -if your right hand switch starter button (black with@) is stuck on,when the ignition and RED on/OFF button is on.
Pretty sure the "remote starter switch" is the "starter relay"- you don't do anything with it special. It acts as a relay does so you have a high amp wiring going to your starter- and low amp wires going to your right hand switch. Flip the one circuit closed (right hand switch) and it closes the other circuit (high amp power to starter). If you disconnect power to the starter- or have a weak battery that's the "click" you hear.
To test you:
(page 288 of 2009 Service Manual)
Electric start remote control switch check (TE-SMR-TXC)
Disconnect the starter relay coupling (A). Disconnect the cables from the positive
and negative poles of the battery to avoid short circuits during assembly.
Disconnect the cables of the starter motor and the positive cable of the battery
from the relay. Apply 12 volts to the terminals (1) and (2) of the relay and check
the continuity between terminals B-M.
Do not apply the battery voltage to the starter relay for more than five
seconds to avoid overheating and therefore damaging the winding. Using
a multi-tester, check that the winding is on open circuit or if a resistance is present.
The winding is in good condition if the value of the resistance revealed is as
indicated.
Multi-tester dial indication: Ohm
Starter relay resistance. Standard: 3 – 6 .

Thanks for the input guys.

I have been Lanai for some time so i wasnt in contact with the rest of the world.

Just befor I left i took the relay out and smacked it in the palm of my hand to loosen the spring. Went for a short ride and got some fuel to see if it would act up.
No problem that ride.

Just got home from Lanai and went for 30 min test ride.. No problem

Thanks for the offer frank!
If she acts up I will be gettn ahold of you. And the tip about parts....Priceless. Thanks
