    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Questions about swingarm and frame fitment

So my 83 xc250 is nearly complete. I have a question about the swingarm and frame interface. When I tighten up the swingarm nuts the frame squeezes on the arm. I would think some kind of bushing would go between the swingarm and frame but I looked at the parts fisch and it does not show anything. Does anyone know what I am doing wrong?

The trunnion in the needle bearing is supposed to be the bit the frame/engine bites onto....this allows the swing arm to pivot on the bearings... better check the inner trunnion of the needle roller bearings in the swingarm..
 
moving the washer wouldnt create or remedy this problem

2 x part number 13 and 2 times the bushes in the engine cases should = the width of the frame . is everything you took out the same as what you put back in ?
 
Yes, the wear washers perform an important job. It is not at all uncommon to find them missing. We include them with our bearing, bush and seal kits...

I will check to see if #13 sticks out beyond the swingarm.

Andy, Where are the wear washers? Do they have to do with the engine bushings?

The parts diagram makes it look like the washer (10) fits on the outside of the frame. It doesn't, it should go between the swingarm and the frame.
As Andy said, they are important as the frame/swingarm combo is designed for a set width. Otherwise when you tighten the nut it squeezes the frame in.
 
The bush (item 13) holds the washer against the inside of the frame.

The wear washers (item 10) are a bit of a fiddle to keep in place whilst you re-assemble everything. Two pairs of hands helps or grease the washers to 'stick' them to the frame when you slide the spindle in... Or slide a 10mm piece of round bar right through first and use the spindle (12mm) to push it out as you wiggle it in...

Have the front engine mounts on and slightly loose to hold the motor square during the process.

Also, make sure that the bushes in the back of the engine casings (the ones the swing arm spindle goes through) are tight in the cases. If they are loose, give the cases to a machine shop to bore the holes out round and make some oversize bushes.

Do not press a bigger bush into an oval hole - as you will definitely cause the magnesium cases to crack!

Also, whilst you have the swing arm in your hand, check to see if the chain tensioner welded on lug is badly worn. If it is - this is the time to cut it off and replace it. We supply these as a 'repair' item - as did the factory back in the day...
