    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Q related to use of Battery Tender

Hi gang. This is probably a stupid question or concern, but what the hey, better safe than sorry I suppose.

Last year my g/f gave me a Battery Tender Junior (product here: http://batterytender.com/products/motorcycle/battery-tender-junior-12v-at-0-75a.html ) It's the type that plugs into the wall (looks like a transformer that plugs into the wall.)

Now, in reading the install instructions (as in "what the he*l why not", even though I'm clear on how it operates) it states:

"The UL-1236 Standard requires a total of 12 feet from the AC mains wall receptacle to the battery terminals."

Well, here's the thing: Where my bike is parked I have a wall receptacle right by the rear fender- at about fender height...so the charging unit (the transformer looking thingie plugged into the wall) would be about 1.5-2 feet from where the battery is. Is this really a problem? As strange as it sounds the bike is sitting in my kitchen for the winter so I can do the cup washer job, steering bearings, etc. My kitchen isn't big (so getting 12 ft. between the two will be impossible, nor do I want to run an extension cord all over.)

Please let me know if you have thoughts on this. Sorry if it's a bone headed question...I'm not too sharp when it comes to electrical stuff. :)
 
Had the chance to read up on it a bit. Seems a very small concern with AGM batts as they don't produce/pass as much hydrogen, plus the BT settles in to maintenance charging.
 
The max length of the cord is 12 feet by the text on your link and by the fact the one my car is plugged into is the same. Just plug it in and attach clips, etc...

Wow, you read directions?:lol! I've been putting the bat tender on the seat while it's plugged in right next to the bike. I leave it on the bat overnight or over days if I'm not riding it. I've never had a problem.

Thanks man...good to know. I'm not one to read instructions manuals either, usually, but do tend to over-think things sometimes. That, and given my general ineptitude when it comes to electrical stuff, made me think I'd better. Evidence of my track history w/ electricals is in post #3 of this thread. :)

BTW the tender seems to work as it should...it's been on it for several days w/out any issues, of course.
 
Pretty sure that the UL standard says 12 feet MAXIMUM. I highly doubt it intends for the bike to be exactly 12 feet away from the outlet.

I suspect they just don't want you running the 12V DC wires 100 feet or some such nonsense.

If they really require 12 feet minimum, I am going to need a bigger garage.
