  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

thinking about picking up a enduro. Already have dual sport/touring bike (gs)
Seems like few decent deals on new 2013's in pa.
Plan on mostly trails/woods/farm type riding.
6'6 230lbs
Looking forward to riding lightweight bike in the dirt
Any suggestions about the two bikes in question?
Plan on buying bike outright
If I buy the 449 won't have leftover money in budget for farkles
What do you guys think?
Anyplace fun to ride near Cleveland besides friends property in stow?

Did you say lightweight...? Then the small bore characteristics of the 310 might be what you're looking for. I'm not saying the 449 is heavy just more CC means more reciprocating mass which means its not as easy to toss around like a small bore.
 
Light weight is all relative. The guy rides a BMW 1200gs. I'm 6'1 and feel much more comfortable. That being said I'd still want bar risers. I think the 310 is great if you want to become a better rider or you want to race around everywhere. The 449 is the lazy mans bike where you just let the motor do the work. The 449 definitely feel heavier but I had a wr250x and drz400sm before and the 449 feels really light in comparison.

I haven't really kept up on what's needed with the 2013 and newer TE 310's as far as powering up is concerned. The 449 will need a defatted exhaust and map3 (zip Ty racing does the map for $40)

They're both amazing bikes I've spent a ton of time on the TXC and TC and would say I prefer the 449 just for comfort. Oh, and I'm lazy and like the torque.

At the top of the 4 stroke section is sticky thread with info on the 449/511. I'd read through that before you made any decisions though.
 
Having recently converted from Road/sports bikes to Dirt I bought the 449. Love the bike but in hindsight shouldve bought the 310. Most riding with mates is primarily tight single track which suits all of them on 250s, which the 310 wouldve been better, but once we hit the open stuff I love the extra power/stability. Im 6'0 and around 90 kgs and have trouble tip toe-ing through the tight rutted stuff in the event of a get off. Mind you my technique dirt wise means Im not a riders a-hole so someone with more off road experience might be a little different.

If youre doing more open trails for your size Id recommend the 449. Tighter stuff go the 310.

Either way you'll have a great ride.
 
Ya-I'm used to riding a bulky GS. Doubt i'll ever race. Might pack in van and road trip. lots of friends in CO/CA I'll listen to what people have to say and make a decision.
 
I'm 6'3" 240 lbs. I'm riding a 449 and throw it around without a problem. It's nice to have the extra power when you get on a long straightaway or open road . Go for the 449
 
Its really "small bore vs big bore" ... which characteristics do you like better?

Oh, you may know but these are two completely different bikes and not just different size version of the same thing.
 
449 but I'm biased cause I own one. Rode both and 449 was my choice. $400 will get ya a pipe and ecu done.

The 449 really doesn't need ANY farkles. A few bucks to reflash and some simple things you can do yourself and you are good to go. Handguards is really all I had to pay for. My bike is basically bone stock and is fantastic in the woods.

Decat, maps set #3, handguards, emissions can - and you are done. Your total cost there is about $150 with most of that in the hand guards.

Oh and tires - the stockers BLOW.
 
If you are a single track buff then the 310 is an out and out winner (you will need bar risers-cheap as). I if it is mixed use fire trail, jeep track and some single trail then the 449 is a better proposition for you given your over all size. Really horses for courses.
 
Gearing towards 449. Emailed few dealers to see if they still have in stock/see what best price out the door. Waiting
 
I ride an '09 GSA. Anything else will feel smal in the dirt. You don't describe what type of dirt riding, but I can assume the stuff that's too rough to be fun on your GS. At 6'6", 230, 449.
 
GS is too big for me to ride in woods like a dirt bike. Looking for something lighter to rip around on. Use the GS for touring/traveling/fire roads ect. Think I can find a 2013 for less than $5,999.00?

Ya I know the feeling, it was only after I saw this picture from a local enduro event did I realize how big I looked on a 310... Iv'e since made some ERGO adjustments. Tall seat and extra tall risers, lowered pegz, etc. And lost some weight. LOL
