• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Passenger Footpeg Question

I have an FMF Q4 exhaust and it attaches to the passenger footpeg mount at the subframe. It also attaches to the bike in the front by the header and in the rear of the subframe for a total of three anchor points.

I went down a couple of weeks back and the part where the exhaust attaches to the subframe by the rear passenger foot peg got tweaked and bent. I took it to a shop and told them that I really didn't need the footpegs, but if they could fix the bent u-bolt and reattach the exhaust. When I got the bike back they told me that since the exhaust was attached in two other places I really didn't need this mount. So I have the foot pages off, and the pipe feels sturdy, but my question is whether or not I should have this third anchor point for the exhaust. The mechanic at the local shop seems to think it is redundant and not necessary?

How much rough trail riding do you see? I would be worried about the vibrations and bouncing of the whole unsupported muffler. If you're not careful, you'll eventually fatigue the other mounts and/or the head studs...

So you're only mounted by the rear hanger now?
Not good. You will be putting quite a bit of strain on the head pipes and even the cylinder head. The mount is not redundant.

You are correct, and that was exactly my thought. I do quite a bit of trail riding and was worried that when I crash on that side again I would end up with more damage. Didn't think about the stress on the header bolts. I think I will be putting that back on myself.

Exactly. Mount is not redundant as your crash proved and sounds as if it did its job properly. Without that mount supporting, I bet your pipe would have got really bent. Better a bent mount plate than a deformed exhaust.
