  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Oil Change Schedule for X-Lite

Husqvarna
B Class
The salesman I bought my new 2012 TE250 from said he changes his oil every 2 hours when racing and every 4 hours with casual riding. In the Workshop Manual for racing it says to change the oil after the first 3 hours then every 16 hours while checking it every 8 hours. For non-racing it says to change the oil after the first 1,000 km, then every 5,000 km.

I'm wondering what other people do (racing and non-racing)? Why would it be necessary to change the oil so frequently, like every 2 or 4 hours? Does the oil degrade that quickly? Would I be able to keep an eye on the sight window and as long as it's between the marks not worry about changing?e_oil_racing_legend.gife_oil_std_legend.gif

I don't think a good oil will degrade that quickly. I believe the issue is that there is so little of it in the engine that it gets dirty quickly.

There was a guy posting on another thread, he said he was gonna change his oil every 100 miles, I said, Are you serious, and he said Yeah, I like my engine to have clean oil,

I dual sport my 450 and I change the oil every 1000 miles whether it needs it or not, my engine is in excellent condition. I DO use synthetic, that makes a big difference, I also have a 2 quart sump, which you don't have..

Personally I change mine after every other ride or about 100 miles (4-6) hours ride time. The oil filter gets changed every other oil change. The oil comes out somewhat dirty. I am certain I could stretch the interval out further however considering it holds less than a quart of oil, it is a cheap security and offers peace of mind.

I dumped the factory oil and used conventional oil for break in. Changed oil and filter after first 30 mins. I changed oil and filter next hour, then next 2 hours then next 4 hours for 4 oil changes. At 20 hours I flushed the radiators and filled it with engine ice and changed the fork oil, brake and clutch fluid. I then went to synthetic Mobile 1 and change the oil every 8 hours and the filter every 16. (oil still looks clean at 8 hours I do not want to push it until it looks dirty).

The 250/310 only uses 800ml of oil so every 5th oil change is free:D and oil only costs $9 a change.

I check tire pressure, oil and coolant before every ride.

Every ride I do is at race pace, so if I was dual sporting it I would not have a problem going with 16hrs. I do not go with mileage recommendations on dirt bikes.

These bike call for so little oil that it is cheap and important to change it often.

The TC service schedule calls for oil/filter change every 10 hours. Which I believe I will start following next service at 50 hours.

You will get 100 different answers from 100 different people.

I change oil & filter every 5 hours (racing).

There is one thing for sure, an engine never failed because the oil was too new / clean !

I guess I'm most interested in non-racing schedules that people use since I'm not a racer. I realize people do things differently but it's nice to hear what's working and has worked for folks in the past. Does anyone go with the 5000 km/3000 miles schedule? Thanks for the input so far.

I would not go 3000 miles. Its a small cc engine that revs very high plus has contaminants from the clutch. I have notice the oil gets dirty very quickly I change mine after about every 5 hours.

2011 TE310, do not race. Ride mostly dirt, connecting trails. Ride fairly hard.

I never let it get past 15 hours between changes (and that's probably pushing it).

The X-lites hold less than a quart of oil (!). Being a hi-output, small displacement race engine, that oil gets worked pretty hard. I use Rotella T6 Synth.

100 hard hours on my TXC310 change the oil about every 4 hours using Rotella T6 which has cut my Rekluse clutch chatter to almost never. I use a stainless oil filter (CR450R fits perfect) which I clean every 3rd oil change.

I was changing oil every 800 miles and people thought I was absolutely crazy... I'm not a racer, just an amateur weekend rider that goes on easier trails, never keeping it pinned for more then 5 seconds.. but the bike is uncorked.

It is what it is. I think with these particular engines you have to be a bit more meticulous because it is small as others have said. I change oil every 300-400 miles now but I do ride a bit of road to get from trail to trail.

While on the subject of OIL - Are the TE / TXC / TX oil filters all interchangeable? Could I get a TXC oil filter and fit it on the TE model without issue?

We're of similar mind. I use the factory recommended oil (unless the shop does the change - they use Rock Oil). I change it about every 24 hours. It's been changed twice in 600 miles. 99% off road use. novice to barely intermediate level rider, although I do open it up in open areas, but that's rarely for long.

When changed, the oil is dark, but not black. It's ready, but not overdue for a change. I've been ratcheing up my change frequency the longer I own the bike as I'm riding it harder as my experience improves. I'll probably settle on about 16 hour intervals.

The oil filter part # is the same: 8000 A7019

HiFlo filter: HF116

the x lite only holds a small amount of oil less than 1l it is servicing the whole engine / so change it frequently approx 300km do the filter as well - just as important if not more important clean/oil and change the air filter.

I owned a 2010 tc250 and raced it mostly on mx tracks. I changed oil every 2 hours and it needed it. These motors run hot and if rode hard 2 hours is the most if I was a A rider it would be every hour. Four easy trail riding 4 hours sounds about right. These motors are not like a old XR,DRZ, motor than can go 20 hours hard no problem on oil change.

Every 300 miles or so is fine, more is better, but not necessary. Racing is different, and I understand that not everyone runs their bikes as hard as we did. Our oil changes were every race.

1 quart of oil 7.00, peace of mind every 100 miles, priceless. Often time riding it slower makes it hotter,
I don't understand the reluctance for frequent changes, these are not Japanese playbikes. My manual says they
Are racebikes...they are high maintenance if you want to protect the thousands of dollars you spent.
I just do it when I come back from riding, check bike over, bolts, guards, clean chain (I want it to last too)
Dump oil, look at everything, it's ready to go next time. I have been doing this for 40 yrs., Never had an engine
Failure, and people love to buy my used bikes, so I can buy more....

Those Japanese 'playbikes' often out perform most others , play nice ;) And when I bought my 2010 TE 250 - it was advertised as Dual Sport.. LoL
