• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Looking for new pads

Poopy - bummer!

Broken my left patella x2 - first time was in the Army, barely noticed it as I also broke the left tib/fib, my right radius/ulna and nicked the left radial artery - my mind was too otherwise occupied to notice a little thing like a sore knee, I guess. Second time was 5 years ago skateboarding (yes, check my age, I'm an idiot).

Both times were through and through breaks, luckily non-displaced (so no wire and screws - that's in my right foot but its a totally different injury)

First one, the Army had me in physical therapy before the anaesthesia wore off and I never noticed the knee, by the time the tib/fib had healed the knee felt great. They had me strengthening the quad with no-resistance range-of-motion (limited) and I was taking calcium supplements. I was jumping 3 months later, doing PT, humping a ruck.

Second one, my (then) crappy insurance wouldn't cover physical therapy, and I still feel it. I spent 6 weeks in an immobilizer. In fact, it changed the way I walk enough that I'm having bunion surgery next month on the left side and will probably need it on the right in a few years.

Point is - do your phys therapy! And go see a Knee specialist. Looking back I should have just paid for it myself after the second time - hell, I can always make more money, but I'm only going to get one body. :banghead:

And get better knee pads.

And dodge the rocks.

Wow thats some great advice everyone! I will look up a knee specialist asap, sounds like the way to go.

Thanks so much.

Rob

1 month later, I can walk pretty normally, but still cant put a lot of weight on my knee. No riding sucks. Im thinking 2 more weeks then a light ride.

What is the cost of the Thor Force? I need a new set myself.

Heal quick Poopy.

I pounded my kneecap into my femur when I was 18 . Took over 6 months to heal / get off of crutches . Still acts up /swells up from time to time for no reason......

Asterix.

They are expensive, but worth it. I think hockey kneepads are a mistake.

You want to protect your kneecap, but also you want to prevent both hyper-extension, and any sideways carnage.

A big heavy moto-boot flailing around during the crash can rip your knees soft tissue and spin it in circles.

Asterix are one of only a few that will prevent all types of knee injury.

+1 on asterix or cti..hard to get used to but then you feel naked without them ..you can get them custom fit with a few measurements

I think hockey pads will be too big to fit into boots.
It seems to me back when I was racing twenty-odd years ago you couldn't buy mx pants without knee/shin protection. What happened? Now you can't find any mx pants that have built-in protection. Being more of a casual dual-sporter these days I go with non-mx pants that have built-in CE approved armor for both the knee/shin and hips or off-road pants with Dainese under-armor for day rides. Those Asterisk pads look like the cats meow though. Maybe when I'm done dumping money into my bike :D

Ouch! I'm sorry to hear that, Poopy. I fractured my kneecap falling off my GSXR about 13 years ago and I can still remember the searing pain I felt. It seemed like it was pretty sensitive for quite a while after it healed, like if I lightly smacked it against a table leg or whatever.

I wear a custom CTi brace on my right knee and an off-the-shelf CTi brace on my left, and they have built-in knee pads that are great. Big bucks, but I've had both ACL's surgically repaired, so...:excuseme:

When doing some dualsporting in the summer, I wear a pair of super-vented Fox knee/shin guards. I'm not generally a fan of Fox gear for off-road applications, as it seems most of their stuff is geared towards the less demanding world of MX, but these guards have been really durable and protective. I have a hard time dealing with the heat when riding and the ventilation works much better than I'd hoped.

Get well soon and good luck in your quest for the perfect knee protection. It's worth every penny you'll pay.

I too wear CTi's. I was fortunate, that I got customs for both legs. I did buy the Thor Force guards for trail work on the bike and light DS riding. I put them on over my jeans or under riding pants and they work great.
