Poopy - bummer!
Broken my left patella x2 - first time was in the Army, barely noticed it as I also broke the left tib/fib, my right radius/ulna and nicked the left radial artery - my mind was too otherwise occupied to notice a little thing like a sore knee, I guess. Second time was 5 years ago skateboarding (yes, check my age, I'm an idiot).
Both times were through and through breaks, luckily non-displaced (so no wire and screws - that's in my right foot but its a totally different injury)
First one, the Army had me in physical therapy before the anaesthesia wore off and I never noticed the knee, by the time the tib/fib had healed the knee felt great. They had me strengthening the quad with no-resistance range-of-motion (limited) and I was taking calcium supplements. I was jumping 3 months later, doing PT, humping a ruck.
Second one, my (then) crappy insurance wouldn't cover physical therapy, and I still feel it. I spent 6 weeks in an immobilizer. In fact, it changed the way I walk enough that I'm having bunion surgery next month on the left side and will probably need it on the right in a few years.
Point is - do your phys therapy! And go see a Knee specialist. Looking back I should have just paid for it myself after the second time - hell, I can always make more money, but I'm only going to get one body.
And get better knee pads.
And dodge the rocks.
