  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

In Baja, Metal in oil, Need help identifying...Photos

Here is what I am pulling out of my engine. George (Up-tite) just rebuilt my engine, and I rode an easy 100 street miles with the stock 1/4 throttle stop in, changed the oil and no metal. I then rode an easy 300 dirt/street miles with the 1/4 throttle stop in, changed the oil, no metal. Took the throttle stop out. I then rode from Tecate to San Felipe (224 miles), then from San Felipe to Bay of LA (239 miles), changed the oil, no metal. I then rode from Bay of LA to San Ignacio (263 miles), then San Ignacio to Puerto San Carlos (301 miles) changed the oil, and pulled this off the magnet.

The consensus is that these are pieces of the race for one of the internal bearings. Motor still sounds and feels strong. I have not noticed any strange noises or any performance issues.

I have pulled the magnet on each of my oil changes to check for metal. I am sitting in the hotel room in San Carlos and crying because I fear this is the end of my trip. We have 2 more days to Cabo. All the work and the saga I went through to get here, and my husky just can't make it. I just want to die. Any thoughts?

-Blake

dang man that sucks! those are major junks of metal! ya i wouldn't ride anymore after seeing that kind of carnage! and you just finished getting it all done!

I am feeling for you man! I read your thread on getting your bike together for the trip, and now this. Don't make a decision based on what I say, 'cause I'm no expert, but from my perspective, it looks like you are done this go around. Keep us posted.

check under valve cover, ign. cover and clutch cover thats the easy things to check quick without pulling motor, good luck

Count your blessings you're in Baja unlike most of us. You got some riding in! You're able to hook up to internet! You're alive and the bike's still running! Sucks about the metal; smell the roses kid!

Well, the guy to ask is George, have you PM'd him?

I had a chunk the size of ONE of those, and it FREAKED ME OUT****************************************

George suggested it could be part of the stator magnets, and suggested I check the other covers and then do a short ride. I actually delayed and put off the next change because I didn't wanna know.

I'm not gonna say ride it, cus that's a lot of crap... But have you cut into the filter to see if there is metal paste there?

Def take both covers and the bag filters out and see if there's crap there. If clear I'd be tempted to ride it and make daily oil changes. (or more) But please don't listen to me!! Ask George!

THe worse part is how it affects your mental state. Every creak and bang will freak you out.

WWGD? I would definitely take that advice over any other in your situation. Good luck and make the best of it. Better times will come regardless ......

Oh man, thats just sucks!!! :banghead: I would not ride it, nothing good can come of it other than being stranded somewhere. Sorry to hear it man.

Blake pull ign cover look behind the flywheel. You should see the LH main bearing, if you see the bearing balls and retainer then its the seal on the bearing that is comming apart. As long as the ball retainer is still there with the rivets intact should be ok to continue. Get as much of the debris out as you can.
Pull clutch cover and look at the RH main also same thing.
Tried to call no answer call me (714)540-2920. Later George

Did you ever figure out where the metal came from?

Con rod bearing. Had it replaced and had another issue. there is a thread around here about it somewhere. Ended his Baja trip. Never heard what happened after that???

Metal was from the seal on LH main bearing. No big just came out of the bearing. The seal is very thin soft metal with rubber coating, easily digested by the motor without any worries for any major relating failures. Blake could have finished his ride on his bike but rode a different bike that was availiable. Later George

Thanks for the update George.

How many miles on his bike?

With Clayton's and Now Blake's bikes having these bearing issues, and seeing metal in mine that one time I'm getting extremely paranoid.
