• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

My bars are bent from a spill on my last ride of the season in the fall. Just getting ready to ride again and I have to replace the bars and a signal light. There is no local dealer now. I can order the stock bars but I'm thinking about upgrading to fat bars...
Anyone done this? I'm wondering what clamps to use, what bars will have the room to fit the controls, and whether or not the stock bars have locator holes drilled in them for the switch gear.

Thanks for any info!

Any 7/8 bars from Protaper or the like would be 100% better.
Bent mine in the first month. Since then have tried Protaper high bend ATV for year and half. Dropped plenty of times with no signs of deformation. Now using Protapers lowest 7/8 bars.
For locating the controls, I removed the little brass pins out of the controls themselves.
No problem after 2 years.
Cheers

Thanks! I've replaced lots of bars on sleds and bikes. I'm wanting black fat bars for this bike. I want a higher bend as well. I'm wondering what clamps to use...
Did you grind off the locator pins or do they just come off? I've had to grind them off before.
I'm planning to add the heated grips while I'm at it.

Thanks guys!

SnackAZ, that is exactly the setup I'm looking for. Ordering the clamps and bars today. Hoping I can find the nylon inserts locally!

Thanks again SnackAZ. I couldn't find bushings so I made some out of aluminum pipe I bought at Home Depot...

I'm not sure about the bar pad. I will probably leave it off.

Good idea on the spacers. Which bend bar is that? It must be a little bit higher because I can see that you routed the throttle cables underneath. I'd say ditch the pad as well.

I see that you have a little buddy keeping you company as well.

The bars are KX high bend. The same mentioned in the link above. Its been six months since I've ridden the bike so I can't appreciate any difference from the stock bars. I'd say its close though. I had my first ride today and they feel great. I do think there is less vibration than before. It was 8C here today and I still don't have my hand guards installed. My hands go numb very easily but I managed ok. The cold and vibration is a huge issue for me. Same goes for sledding in winter. I have carbon fibre fat bars on my sled and that helped a little too.
An appointment coming up this week to have heated grips installed and then the hand guards go back on. I'll be much more comfortable then. Time to put some kms on!

And yes, that is my little buddy. He goes everywhere with me. He was tired and bored then but he had been playing most of the time. His name is Copper :)

I saw this option mentioned twice thus far. Its a nice clean look and better bars without a doubt.
I also suffered seriously bent bars recently but I decided to go with 1 1/8 set up with more rise. Since the local Vancouver based "Motosportz" guys stopped producing their nice CnC set, I decided to figure out something else.
So this is where I went. It's not the nicest but it does the trick. The Protaper fat bar adapters don't really fit without a little modification, but they offer more rise. The holes drilled in the base are too close, the shaft and head of the factory Torx bolts make hard contact.
The fix is to carefully file the holes oblong, leaving enough shoulder for the head of the Torx to rest safely.

At this point the bold shafts will both thread in straight, until the heads make contact with the outer edge of the lower mount. My solution here was to carefully grind a hair of material off both sides with a stone and 90 degree die grinder.

From there I tightened the bolts down evenly with a little grease in each side, and more lube on the threads, one turn at a time, alternating back and forth to ensure the mount was forced into place evenly within cupped factory base.

I did not like the gap left by the factory base's uneven surface. So I fashioned an aluminum spacer from a cable stop in order to occupy the gap.

I ensured that spacer was not so thick that it took all the load from tightening, and that the center made good contact in the cup well before the spacer made contact with both surfaces. I also filed one edge down so that it would not interfere with the mount and base.

And that's it. The bars are about as high as I want them and the fat-bars are a wonderful addition. This will do until I can get some one-piece fat-bar risers CnC'd custom for me, and I will once I acquire another copy of autocad...
In combination with the Windham bars, the rise is just right for height, and a significant strength increase over the original bars. I'm pretty sure those things were made of butter, I am definitely not impressed with that engineering decision.
The black pan-head allens intended for the base, look nicer holding the caps down than the 10mm hex sent in the kit. imo
I may switch to polished stainless pan heads later, should these prove less weather proof.

That looks like a lot of customizing, but it turned out well. It's a shame that Motorsportz won't make another batch of their fat bar risers. There are been a lot of TR650s sold since they last produced them.

I plan on using the single bolt in the center and not using the oem mounts. This plus an ATV Raptor bend bar should give about a 2" rise.

Oh, and your gas cap is upside down. :)

Oh, and you're gas cap is upside down. :)

Lmao, yes it is upside down, as is the throttle. Only one was intentional. I seem to recall scrambling to get the gas cap on and fleeing the service station to avoid this old man from telling me the same story about the Husqvarna he had in the 70s... Every damn time the same story.

I just went with a Renthal 7/8" bar in their Enduro line. The Vintage/Desert bend. Works well.

I just finished up installing my ProTaper Contour #2842D Metal Mulishia 1 1/8" bars. These things are pretty awesome. I weighed the stock bars at 2 lbs 6 oz and new bars at 1 lb 10 oz. Nearly the same bend and height as the stock, a little less pullback. I haven't ridden it yet, but feels good. About one inch taller with the risers. A little cable routing and all is good. Problem is now I need something to bolt to the fatter bars for the handguards.
