  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

exercise and diet

Update: im still 190lbs at this mornings weigh in, im disappointed but have not been this light for over 7years. Thanks for all the helpful info. Well done to all who have met there target weights. Whilst ive been thinking about my diet and exercise my only point of view for me is i need a diet that i dont know im on including my excercise. Im not as strong willed as most of you so my weight lose will be slower than all of yours. Next update this time next week.

Consistency is key. Your weight will fluctuate. What you need to do is look at it long term and watch for trends. I weigh in once a week, first thing in the morning, on the same day every week. That helps keep things consistent.

It's a long, slow process. It took me 2 years to get to the point where I was "finished" losing weight.

everything in moderation----bollocks , no pockets in a shroud, and as the landie boys say ''one life, live it.'' i agree with this but - the bank manager can't read and has never slung his leg over a hot ride ****************************************.
but if you are serious about losing weight
have a go at this .
count calories coming in and reduce = weight loss
add this to riding your bike regular= sensible weight loss over time.
btw
Alain Roland should be made to cockle pick bare handed for 6 months minimum. has he ever been to specsavers?

Spud1968....I'm so slow on my bike so I could never give anyone any riding advice...I do know a thing or two about nutrition...calories in calories out is a bunch of BS. Since you're older...(I'm 40) you don't have the advantage of having high testosterone and low cortisol...like me, you will have the opposite...here are a couple tricks.

find low GI carb foods...these are your new carbs...sweet potatoes, yams, spinach, blueberries, oatmeal. Search low GI foods. It will improve all of your blood tests and your Dr. will be stoked too. Make sure you get good quality protein and if you work out...have a protein shake after you work out.

Next...start to weight train...train for strength and endurance...if you've never done this before...find a trainer for 3 months to whip you into shape. You will need to put in 1.5 hours per day 3 times a week.

Start running...buy a heart rate monitor, keep your heart rate UNDER 145. You may be doing 12:30 Minute miles but you're in the zone. Don't start running far 1 mile, gradually raise it to no more than 4.

There is a myth that fat is bad across the board. Fat are calories and you need that when your metabolism starts going...take fish oil (which is a 3)...you need to have a balance of fats....not all 6 not all 9.

Don't focus on scale weight...get hydrostatic "dunk tested" which will show you your lean mass. No man should ever "diet" through caloric restriction. I eat 3500 calories a day and am currently 13% body fat.

Surround yourself with health people.

Good luck.

nope nope nope...this does nothing to increase metabolic mass...you diet like a woman and end up looking like a runway model.

Most of what you posted is great stuff, here's some add on:
My blog on my TE450 includes "cheap tricks". Here's a cheap trick (no cost, if you don't wanna mess with dunk testing) for measuring body fat: I used a 12" crescent, on 4 parts of my body:thigh, tricep, suprailiac, and belly. Crank it down until it's tight, but it will still pull off. Do it the same way and the same places every week. I measured once a week, and over the course of 4 months, my belly measurement went from 26 mm to 12 mm. When my belly fat was at 12mm, the vein in my bicep was visible. I used a web based calculator to determine I was running about 11% then, I was 165 lbs. Now I am at 175 lbs, the vein in my biceps not visible and my belly fat measurement is about 18mm, so right now I am at about 16% body fat.

At least for me, I HAD/HAVE TO to restrict calories. I can gain weight on 2500 calories a day. If I ate 3500 cals a day, I'd either weigh 250 lbs, or I'd be exercising 8 hours a day every day.
Right now, I need to drop 5 lbs and I brisk-walk 4 miles every day, I do some weights and crunches and other floor exercises for 30 mins a day. If I want to lose the 5 lbs, I have to hold my cals a day to 2000 or I wont drop the 5 lbs.

I guess I diet like a runway model, but my wife is not complaining that I look like a girl.:) I guess what I'm saying is that, if there are guys like me reading this, that can't spend any more time exercising than they already do, they, like I, will HAVE TO cut their caloric intake. Not everyone can eat 3500 cals a day and lose weight.

Here's a pic of a free app that charts your progress on the 4 skin fold measurements, first one from when I was at about 205 lbs and then my goal of 165 lbs is the second one.

OlderHuskyRider...that's killer...skin-fold test with a C wrench! You all have wrenches right? The skin-fold test is accurate enough - I have access to a dunk tank anytime I want it so I'll continue to use that. Cardio, core and strength training have been a boon for my riding. I still suck...but I'm never tired.

OHR 175lbs! No wonder you took me in that drag race!!! Just kidding, i like your crescent wrench fat caliper idea. I have only had the cheap plastic ones that break as soon as you squeeze them a little. There are a few dunk tanks around town. I heard one is only $35 but i have also heard a lot of folks complaining about the inaccuracy, based on the operator not the technology.
When i see the 4 pack coming in and then the 6 i'm happy. no calipers needed

I use a bench vise to measure my fat, its a bit tricky laying across the vise with my belly in the jaws and my feet off the floor.

I've just read through this thread for the first time and everything having to do with diet is pretty well covered. I can only add not to forget that diet plays a major role in the healing of injuries as well. Just like weight loss processed sugars are to be avoided at all costs. Many people are motivated to eat right and exercise to compete but once they are on the injured list they let their progress slip away. Don't be that guy! lol

I also need to be careful to not get my meat and two veg caught in the vise jaws whilst the tightening of the jaws process begins. Its all in thw thought process.

I absolutely agree. High calorie diets only work well if your muscles are burning the food energy. If your not active enough you'll gain fat weight.
