After a 4 year absence from my beloved 07 SMR450, I'm picking up a used 09 TE510. Overall, the bike is a bit rough, so It'll be a winter tear down project.
Mechanically, the main issue with the bike is a blown head gasket, or at least that's what the owner claims. Says he was refueling, when white smoke came out upon starting, with coolant leaking outside the head. NO other issues besides that (he claims).
I'm still suspecting other engine damage, for I'm sure the oil was contaminated. Bike has 4300 miles, and the last owner apparently did some work to it, but current owner doesn't know what. I see that its been derestricted and the rear shock was modified, but that's all i see.
I figuring at the least a new head gasket, head resurfaced, new timing chain, cam, valve springs, piston rings, and possible piston. Wondering if at that millage, I should tear apart the cases and replace the rod and lower bearings as well.Any other issues worth looking at on teh newer FI motors?
I threw a rod bearing on my 07 450 at 2200 miles (lots of road race tracks :-), and had the motor redone with a new balanced crank, knife rod, and other internal goodies. The motor really ripped; reved faster than a 2-stroke! That cost me a bit over $2,000, so I'd like to keep this one a bit more reasonable.
Regarding exhaust, anyone know if the stock SMR twin pipe system is noticeably quieter than twin pipe Arrow or LeoVince pipes? Would like to ride on the street a bit, and I don't want to that a-hole that everyone hates.
I'm also thinking about changing this over to an SMR, and adding 17" SMR forks/tripples. Quite surprised on how beefy the stock TE forks are; are there that much difference between teh SMR and TE forks besides valveing?
Also, how much of a difference is the te vs SMR swingarms?
looking forward to this project, I really miss having a Husky in the garage :-)
