  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

engine/bike work on 09 TE510

antirich

Husqvarna
C Class
After a 4 year absence from my beloved 07 SMR450, I'm picking up a used 09 TE510. Overall, the bike is a bit rough, so It'll be a winter tear down project.

Mechanically, the main issue with the bike is a blown head gasket, or at least that's what the owner claims. Says he was refueling, when white smoke came out upon starting, with coolant leaking outside the head. NO other issues besides that (he claims).

I'm still suspecting other engine damage, for I'm sure the oil was contaminated. Bike has 4300 miles, and the last owner apparently did some work to it, but current owner doesn't know what. I see that its been derestricted and the rear shock was modified, but that's all i see.

I figuring at the least a new head gasket, head resurfaced, new timing chain, cam, valve springs, piston rings, and possible piston. Wondering if at that millage, I should tear apart the cases and replace the rod and lower bearings as well.Any other issues worth looking at on teh newer FI motors?

I threw a rod bearing on my 07 450 at 2200 miles (lots of road race tracks :-), and had the motor redone with a new balanced crank, knife rod, and other internal goodies. The motor really ripped; reved faster than a 2-stroke! That cost me a bit over $2,000, so I'd like to keep this one a bit more reasonable.

Regarding exhaust, anyone know if the stock SMR twin pipe system is noticeably quieter than twin pipe Arrow or LeoVince pipes? Would like to ride on the street a bit, and I don't want to that a-hole that everyone hates.

I'm also thinking about changing this over to an SMR, and adding 17" SMR forks/tripples. Quite surprised on how beefy the stock TE forks are; are there that much difference between teh SMR and TE forks besides valveing?

Also, how much of a difference is the te vs SMR swingarms?

looking forward to this project, I really miss having a Husky in the garage :-)

think also about my mantra of adding the SM model counter balancer shaft. They should have all had this on them (450/510 series)

I agree with the above advice, while it'a apart instal the counter balancer. As far as the stock SMR dual exhaust, it's not really that quiet, the twin cans are also fairly restrictive with the cats built into them (the TE has a single removable cat). Regarding the forks, the SMR's bottom lug is set-up for a radial mount caliper and much larger disc. They are also shortened. The SMR swing arm is about 1-2 inches shorter.

So the te bikes don't come with a counterbalancer? I guess that's to make them rev quicker?

I'm guess adding one should smooth out the vibes?

I thought the whole purpose of the dual exhaust vs single was to make the bike a bit quieter? I remember the stock single pipe on my 07 smr450 was pretty loud. Again, just want to make it reasonable for any trail riding, for best not to draw added attention.

Regarding the 4300 miles, probably a good time for lower crank/rod bearings?

Bike has a wiesco sticker on it, makes me think the original owner may have had this motor apart before. Would also explain the leaking head gasket. Will know more once its all apart.

AT first in the DOHC series they had C/B shafts then they dropped them in the offroad models so only the SM machines got them.....that was a big mistake. The motor is soooo much smoother with the C/B shaft installed, My ex 2008 TXC450 is still running strong post op with the C/B shaft installed. We did the engine rebuilt in the High 200 hours range. Also be sure to change the shift drum it wears because its alloy. Yes do all your main bearings, rebulid your crank, its apart just do them all.
PS after removing the pressed on flywheel weight from the crankshaft and with addition of the C/B shft and all its parts I swear my bike actually revved quicker, the FWW is a very heavy disc of steel, the C/B shft and its components are fairly free spinning off the crank.
