Baja husky ride!

IMPORTANT NOTICE:
Caravan #1 will leave Uptite Husqvarna at 7am on Friday.
Caravan #2 will leave Mc Donalds parking lot Calexico at 2pm. Its the Mc Donalds on Hwy 111, east side of street, near the border crossing.
First Beer at 5pm Friday at the Sand Bar at Hotel El Cortez, San Felipe.
WE HAVE 24 beds reserved in 12 rooms at the El Cotez. Its double occupancy, or get a single room if you want privacy (snore, fart alot, sleep walk, arriving late, whatever) There are more rooms available, if needed.
Pay when you get there. Meet us at the bar, have a beer at 5 pm with us, then we will sort the rooms out. If you arrive late, just tell then you are with the motorcycle group. reservation lady couldnt spell Husqvarna, so we are just the 'motorcycle group'

Rooms and a big family style seafood dinner are set up for Sat PM in Bay of LA.
If you only eat meat, let me know, so they can plan.

Where: San Felipe, Baja California, Mexico to "Bay of Los Angelas", Baja California, Mexico, and back.

Leave: San Felipe's 'Hotel El Cortez' early Sat. the 14th of Feb.
Arrive: Bay of LA that evening.
Arrive back to San Felipe the 15th.

Chase truck, radios, sat phones, guide and sweep rider, all provided free, pay your own expenses (about $150/day or less all inclusive).

Must Bring:
-Husky with 70 mile fuel range.
-Good tires/chains/sprockets and HD tubes.
-Passports mandatory, papers for your bikes a very good idea.
-One bag of overnight stuff for the chase truck

Misc Info
-No firearms in Mexico
-Dollars preferred, no need to exchange money, ATM's in San Felipe, but its best to bring cash in US $20 bills-and a few $1's
-All gas for bikes is made in the USA 91 octane.
-Food is mostly Seafood, but steaks also available, rice and beans for vegetarians.
-Temps in the 70's-80's during the day, 50's at night. Bring suntan lotion!
-Hotels each night with secure parking.

Travel Info
-Optional caravan leaves George's shop 7am on Friday-its 5 hours drive time from Uptite Husqvarna to San Felipe.
-Option to meet at the Calexico/Mexicali border at 2pm (Mc Donalds parking lot in Calexico) Its 2 hours drive from the border to San Felipe.
-All meet at Hotel El Cortez in San Felipe for dinner Friday night (beers at the 'Sand Bar' at 6pm.)

Its a big hotel, just get rooms when we arrive. George and I will 'reserve' a few rooms ahead of time.
-Insurance for trucks available at the border in Calexico (Oscar Padilla Ins. Co, or others) Look for the big signs along the main drag in Calexico. Cant miss it. Takes 10 minutes. Costs $100 for a long weekend/truck.
-Paperwork for all vehicles needed in Baja and at the border.
-Safe overnight truck parking in San Felipe

Can you give some more info of what to expect?

George and I have done a few of these Husky rides in baja over the last few years. It always amazes me how cool Husky riders are. Its SO different than other groups. This trip will be the same--a very cool group with that cool Husky vibe we all love so much. Zero 'attitude', absolutely nothing 'extreme', with the gauntlet of riding abilities from novice skill levels to guys who have done the Dakar Rally and many Baja 1000's. This is NOT a race. So dont sweat it at all if you arent sure of your skills or whatever. This is a fun ride weekend for guys who love Huskys.

Both George and I have been riding baja for well over 30 years. We know the place. You will be safe. No banditos where we are going. I am a former baja dirt bike tour guide, speak spanish, lived in baja, etc. etc.
George is THE southwest/baja Husky guru. He has been riding Huskys down there since Johnson was president. (that was 9 presidents ago!)
Just saying you are in very good hands.

Are their many fuel stops, can non-husky's join in, what kind of miles can one expect to be putting on in a day?

Bikes must have a 70 mile fuel range, although we wont go more than 50+/- miles between fuel stops--but for safety everyone needs a 70 mile range.
Bikes must be Husky! Its a Husky trip. If your kid or wife or someone really really really wants to ride on their non-Husky we can always let one or two in, but really its a Husky ride and we want to keep it Husky as much as possible.

The routes down and back are very easy. There are many places to jump off the main route and do some harder stuff if guys want to. Usually we split it up and fast guys go on the harder stuff, newer riders take the easier stuff. There are little small settlements every 50 miles or so with GREAT fresh seafood and cold beer, right on the beach. Park under the palapa and have some fish tacos.

We will ride all day. Leave early, break for lunch, get there before dark.
Its about 150 very easy miles each way. At 25 miles an hour thats 6 hours. Actual time will depend on flat tires, guys stopping for pics, etc. etc. Figure an 8 hour day total with stops and lunch.

Bikes recommended to have a front light, just in case.

There are paved roads nearby so that is always an option too if guys are tired or need a break or whatever.

The fully built 4x4 F350 chase truck (it crossed the Sahara!) will follow us the entire way. So there will be gas in the truck, spares, tools, and water/gatorade etc.
If ya crash ya gotta buy a round of beers. If ya crash hard we will take pictures of ya and then put ya in the truck. And keep going. If its a serious injury we will get ya to a good local clinic and if its very serious we will drive you straight to a US trauma center. Sat. phone in the truck.

My wife and may be going to the Pismo beach area around that time and considered going to Baja anyways. I am not sure if I can bring any of my dirtbikes into Mexico because they are not actually mine, they are demo bikes belonging to Bend Euro Moto, and more importantly, GE Capital. I seem to remember that my insurance states that they are not insured in Mexico. I am willing to risk all that, but I don't think you can bring a vehicle across the border that is not registered to you. So, need another support truck?

Yes! I can most likely make this work with this much lead time! SERIOUSLY Let me know what we need to do.

I have a 3 rail open trailer however that may play into this, could take my Nissan Frontier to pull it if necessary. I'm game.

Crap..I am in desperate need of R&R.

The impromptu Husky memorial ride a while back was great and it would be really great to follow up on that note with a greater adventure.

Another support truck is always welcome. Or just drive mine.

Ive only been asked once in Mex. for papers on my Husky. I said, yes, i have them, and he said ok,-he didnt even look at them.

Its VERY unlikely you would be hassled (asked) for those papers, and if you where hassled, it would only be an excuse to ask for a $20 bribe. But its very very unlikely.

Still you bring up a good point. Everyone needs to bring a passport and papers for their bikes/trucks is a very good idea.

We will get truck insurance at the border.
