  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Am I using the right oil?

My father and I have been riding for over 30 years. I thought I knew everyhting until I switched from Honda to Husky. Lots of different things to learn. I have been riding Husky since 1994 and the one question I never asked was about the motor oil for the bikes. Well I can no longer ask my dad for advice so I now turn to you guys and I know I will be steered in the right direction.
What would anyone suggest using a certain type of synthetic oil on a 2000 TE410? Would it be the same as the new husky's? I had been using Mobil 1 for years and never had an issue. But since I have been more involved I have heard different stories on how you should only use motorcycle oil, and such. Since there are different additives and what not. I did post this in the "oil" thread but I figure I might get a response if I start my own. :)

Save yourself money and trouble and just run Rotella 15w40. Dont get caught up in the "hype". I run it in my 4 stroke and in my gear box on my 2 stroke. I had over 1200 miles on my KTM 300 and never had the first problem.

I don't know anything, but I use Spectro offroad and I think the most important thing is to change it often;-)

I have used many brands of oil in my Huskys..Mobil 1, Repsol, Agip, Castrol, and have not felt any difference. Have been using Repsol for the last few oil changes because I can get it in gallon jugs for a good price.

2 things:
1, make sure you change the oil regularly-the trick here is that regularly does not mean once a month it is dependant on how hard you ride and how often. For instance I am an average weekend warrior and seldom give the motor much curry. However on single tight tracks the engine is none the less getting hot without much assist from air flow over the radiator. Consequently I change my oil every 2 to 3 rides which is 6-10 hours saddle time. I make the decision to change based on the previous rides assesment etc. I also change the oil filter ever second oil change.
2, Make sure that the oil you use does not have too much (preferably none) friction modifiers as this will make the clutch slip-note this can be cumulative in that it may not occur striaght away but a build up can occur between the clutch plates and then she can start slipping. Apart from wearing out the plates faster slippage equals heat which will cause your oil to break down faster.
So the oil decision is yours many riders stay with the expensive bike specific oils and others have found using oils such as Rotella works just as well-up to you as long as you adhere to the above (also keep the air filter clean too).

All you Rotella fans, is there any reason not to use Chevron Delo which is a similar oil for diesels? I can get it much cheaper.

No reason not to. I use Delo in all my bikes - Husky, KTM, Kawasaki, ATK and BMW with no problem whatsoever. I even use it in my Honda lawn mower and Ford trucks.

Cheap by the gallon.

Delo was reformulated a couple years ago. IIRC there is now too high of molly content for a wet clutch application.

Rekluse used to recommend Delo for their auto clutches, they switched to Rotella after Delo was reformulated.

Well CRAP!!!

Thank you for the info though.

The manual for my new 2009 te 250 says 10W60. What viscosity rating are people using. Should I stay away from synthetics for my first change? I use Rotella synthetic on all my other vehicles.

I used Rotella in my first oil change, I was waiting for the factory spec AGIP to come in. I buy rotella in 5 gal jugs for my diesel pickup. The bike shifted a LOT better with the Rotella.

I had my bike serviced at GP cycles in San Diego. They have a husky racing team or something so they know what they're doing...they use Maxima 10/40. That said, I don't know if it's synthetic, semi-syn, or dyno.

The couple of times I did the oil service I used Spectro 20/50 dyno...but that's when it was 100 plus degrees in the summer. Now that it's cooler, I may stick with the 10/40 and may also stick with Maxima if I can figure out which of the 3 (dyno semi or full synth).

Rotella regular or synthetic?

I used regular rotella. I pretty much run Mobil1 in all my gas vehicles.... but the diesel truck is lucky it gets oil at all. You talk about one tough rascal, that truck will run on anything I pour in the tank, and gets fresh rotella about every 10k miles. Been strong for 250k miles....
