  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

87 wr400 issues

Hi guys,

I have an 87 wr400 that I've been trying to get to run properly for awhile now with no luck... It'll rev cleanly and well when in neutral but as soon as I put it under load it just bogs and doesn't want to go, I did find a spot in the midrange in 3rd where it seemed to clear briefly, but, nothing else. I bought it and it had just been rebuilt apparently. I checked and cleaned the carb replacing all the jets and needle for brand new factory standard ones to ensure nothing was worn out. I've checked the inlet manifold and gaskets for leaks and have also checked the timing. The glue has come off a little it's sem but the magnets seem intact and it was about 5 degrees to the left on the degree markers so guessing retarded. It is now spot on. It starts easily and runs fine without load....
Has anyone got any further ideas on what it could be?

The coil looks new, but, will try and swap that out as have a spare. I tested the stator today and I could not get it to read on the multimeter but then my multimeter starts at 200 ohms, so, may be too high...just says one as standard for all wire connections. The oil seals seem to be the double lipped ones from hva so shouldn't be leaking as have the receipt fro them from the previous owner. Also thinking it would be hard to start if they were.

Apologies for the long post but any ideas....I still can't wait to ride her properly :)

Cheers Andy

It does sound a bit like ignition issues. If something has gone high resistance it will probably be ok when not under load. When riding it will be a different matter.
You really need to check the values with your meter. I am sure an electrical guru will be along in a mo.

needle jet not in backwards?, reed valves ok? plenty of fuel in the fuel line and tap flow ok? vent hose not blocked by a wasp nest? plugs good? checked all electrical connections and earths? plug cap isn't stuffed?

no rag stuck in the airbox? muffler isn't blocked? I think that's about it for dicky things that can go wrong except for a correct running SEM which are a potential drama.

probably need to see a bike elec with a proper meter to assess the SEM... shouldn't be too hard.

check out the vintage tech ref section here for details on timing etc

good luck

Cheers guys, forgot to say tap flow seems okay and have checked the reeds and all seem good. Connections are good and air box etc clear. It was apparently freshly rebuilt when I bought it and air filter etc is brand new....thinking it's ignition too now, so will swap out the cdi and try and pick up a better multimeter, although would have expected some sort of reading. If cdi makes no difference then guessing it may bet time to pick up an Electrex stator and upgrade from the sem.

sorry for the 500 obvious things, it a simple checklist I fire out whenever I see these as some people forget some of the simpler things... like I did on the weekend, stripped the tank and seat to find out why it wouldn't start.... checked every thing electrical, spark at plug, fuel running....but no air... large black sock in the carb throat:eek: teach me to refilt the filter in the dark!

Ah no worries, it made sense, I think we've all done something like that at some point :) plus the simple ones are the cheapest ;) it's also very easy to overlook the more obvious, so, I appreciate the post :)

How does the sparkplug look if you drive it until it boogs out and dies?
If it is ignition failure it would be wet right?

It hasn't actually died on me, it just doesn't run properly at all under load, burbles along not revving cleanly

Looked at your answer to Surprize's post. Pull the muffler off and see if it makes any difference. Assuming you have tolerant neighbors :D I have seen two or three posts over the last couple years where that was the culprit. Easy check.

my 87 430 did this and the sparky had goo, changed the reeds, rejeted it leaner and all was well

This may sound really dumb, but disconnect your kill switch, I had this problem on my 83 250XC. Cut the wire & it ran fine again, really had me scratching my head.
Try it.. it couldn't hurt..

Cheers guys, thanks for your ideas, much appreciated :) planning to complete the rebuild on my xl on Friday and will then give the husky some time. I'll let you know how it goes :)
