• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

TE/TC 4CS Issues

That looks awesome. What rear tire you runnin. Looks like it's hooking up good.

The tire is a Goldentyre 523. It's for rocky/ hard terrain. It's actually not that good of a tire for wet roots and rocks. I was supposed to be heading to Johnson Valley California this weekend so I bought these tires. I'll be putting the Motoz Tractionator S/T back on while my suspension is back out again. What makes the difference for traction for me is the ability to lug the 300 right at or below idle to find traction. No auto-clutch stuff for me please.

Changed my fork oil today, trying some new stacks and also modified the pistons as per below left to allow the oil to flow better around the hydrostop (smoothed it a but more after taking this pic)

I know it's just me, but this proves the new bikes are worth the extra cash! the extra cash, the extra cash, the extra cash, the extra cash LOL just had to... and yes, I know they're really good machines.

I think the 4CS is a good design but depending on how and where you ride they will need some work to be acceptable. I'm stoked to get my suspension back and see what it's like. It will have new base valves/Huck valves too. My 501 is in pieces ATM and I just came in from the shop after adjusting the valves. The intakes were right were I set them at 300 miles but the exhaust was 2mm loose. I re-shimmed them and buttoned her up. I cleaned all the crud and dust off the nooks and crannies off the chassis you can't reach with it assembled as well. Good time to go through everything and clean/lube for spring. It's 40f here today and we have a foot of snow coming tonight. End of March i'll be at Loretta Lynn's for the MTDR event. Can't feaking wait:thumbsup:

Had a blast today ripping on the kx500 aluminum frame on the ice! The zipty suspenders were perfect! This was the first set I've ever sent them and I've ridden enzo kawi's, MX tech and several others on kx's and this is right up there with all of them at a fraction of the cost. Ya might wonder what I can tell racing ice but you get chop and ruts and ya ave to transfer weight just like anything. I asked for a wood set up since I'll ride both ice an woods and generally a good woods set up works great on ice.
Needless to say my 4cs got to them last week and have great expectations.

So you don't DTX ice bikes?

So you don't DTX ice bikes?

Some guys throw ice tires on dirt track bikes but nobody I ride with would ever go out of there way to lower a bike and do all the dirt track jazz to there ice bike. I've caught a foot peg on the ice with a full suspension bike so I don't want to be any closer to the ground lol. Plus I'm way more comfy with all that travel.
Even the pro flat track guys I ride ice with run woods bike suspension.

The culture is different in various places. Here locally, everyone rides DTX bikes, even guys who will never turn a wheel on the dirt. 20 years ago, when I started on the ice, they all ran 19" front wheels. I was the first guy in our group to run a 21. I went about 100 miles away to ride and all the guys were running 21's. I got lots of strange looks, when I came home and built a 21, but they all run them now! I've taken a few years off the ice, to snowmobile, but I'm mounting some tires on my Husaberg TE250 and going to run it full height.

When I took my forks to Jeremy at MX-TECH, I mentioned Kreft and others that claim to have a fix for the 4CS short comings. Jeremy explained that Kreft uses the parts that he developed so using MX-Tech seemed like a good idea and the fact that he is 30 minutes from my house doesn't hurt either. I also mentioned that some tuners are converting the 4CS system to an open chamber design and of course he had a chuckle when I said that. At first I thought, "what an ass", but then once he presented his case I got what he was trying to say. He explained that the basic design of the 4CS is good but improper oil flow and under sized parts/valving don't allow the system to function as was imagined from it's inception. Jeremy offers a 4CS package for $700 which addresses the entire system and keeps the basic design using upgraded parts. I expect the forks to be much improved and if they aren't I'll be back there dropping them off until they are. I'll keep yawl updated on how it goes. I pick them up Monday but we just got a foot of snow dumped and another 4-8" before it's done followed by single digit temps and 40mph winds. Fun stuff! Sorry if you guys already new what Jeremy was/is offering but I really wasn't aware that he seems to be the only one who really understands the 4CS setup and offers a better solution that retains the original concept. As mentioned Kreft and others offer a rework using Jeremys parts as well, so we have some options. I sure hope KTM/Husky offers me a $1000 credit towards a future bike purchase for finishing their uncompleted fork system.

I know a bunch of suspension guys are installing his "huck valve".....

Personally $750 pretty high and I can get the drop in Ohlins deal for under a grand that I know works....

i understand and like how he described the whole system but I still dont like it.... I dont like the fact that even changing the oil, which I like to do a few times a year is going to be much harder and really not any benefit for an off road guy to use this system....

I'm not sure Ohlins has drop in cartridges for 4CS yet?

On the Last Kreft viddy I watched Krefting gave MX-Tech a shout out for the MX-Tech developed parts he uses within his fix it package.

As for me I could not wait for someone fix to the 4CS that were going so far as to cause me to crash and get really close to injury on stuff that I was powering through on my KYB equipped TE310 and TXC310R, so I went with the ZipTy reconfigure mod, nice price for this mod with years of R&D behind it......like you said mine are now simple open chamber REB on top COMP on bottom forks, and Im super happy with it this way. For me at the time (beginning of 2014) the 4CS were unworkable and dangerous for what and how I ride. Im glad these tuners are working hard on them and getting them corrected but at 1k and 1K plus...that's a hard $$ pill to swallow.

I thought ZipTy mentioned that the Marzocchi cartridge inserts are compatible with the body of the 4CS forks to convert them to cartridge forks ..or that they have a top cap that accepts the insert...probably 1.5K or even more for that set up.

My guess is they still will not be as forgiving as your ZipTy setup. I find it really hard to beat a good set of open chamber forks for rough off road work.
