    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

449/511 Important Urgent Flywheel Inspection

9880STS had his stator damaged by a loose screw from the flywheel. It has also damaged his flywheel itself.

I had already decided to check mine as a precaution after reading his post when we talked today & it was decided I'd loan him mine while I'm away for work.
I've just opened up the cover & was greeted by 2 loose screws!!

Do yourselves a favour, pull the Alt cover off & loctite these screws in!! :)

Mine is 3800 km, I think Helmut's was 4000 ish.
Currently no stock of parts in Aus from Husky, GX450 BMW part (same) has a shorter lead-time for O/sea orders.
 
Here the picture of the Damage ,...rewinding wont do it as the core is broken too also a deep mark in the flywheel.

I used Red stud lock. Hopefully it does OK in the oil.
It's all I had on hand, but will read up at work on the others in the range to see if there's a better one.

I will be rechecking mine for sure.
 
This is what happend to the 1st husky I owned. (610sms) I will definately check mine... I've only got blue loctite, will that be ok?
 
Thanks for the heads-up guys. I'm busy with my flywheel at the moment and will take the opportunity to locktite everything!
 
Actually it was just a weird coincidence - I had opened up my flywheel to weight it - my plan for this week. I stopped for lunch and thought I'd read a few posts and my eyes nearly popped out my head at Dangermouse's thread. I've only done 1000km on my 449 so I didn't expect to find anything loose but I will be fixing all screws with Loctite.
 
Right now I'm working on a vintage resto project with my 84 IT, so the Husky is filed to the side. Will check mine before the next ride. I'm only at ~1400 miles, but not willing to chance a simple check. If you lay it over, how much oil does it leak?
 
You know, I don't know if there is room in there but I'd take all them bolts out, drill them, red loc tite and safety wire them. Looks too expensive to tear up stator and these bolts on 4 stroke seem to come loose a lot?
I am not familiar with model cause I have the 310. Just a thought?

This has happened to the G450X BMWs as well but the bolt heads have broken off leaving the shank of the bolt itself still fully engaged all the way into the holes. That head of the cap screw rattling around in there will short out and destroy the internals of the Stator and flywheel. So it's a good idea to not over tighten these fasteners. Torque to spec and use Blue Loctite or equivalent.

I have also seen Forum website posts on the stator screws themselves doing the same thing and hashing the electrical internals on the G450X Riders Forum.

So, after we check the screws, are we replacing the gasket? Do we glue it on with RTV? Or put it on dry? Opinions please.
 
As long as the gasket isn't damaged it should be reusable. That's up to you, as well as what gasket sealer if any you may want to use. That alone could start a week long rant from all the in house Resident Experts telling us what to use.

I know what I used. So I'm going to leave it at that. I have a spare Factory BMW gasket I got on ebay for about $21.00 and its still left in the box of parts for next time. I didn't need it last year when I checked mine out for the same reasons as mentioned above.

Also inspect the windings on the back side of the stator assembly that isn't easily seen when mounted from the inside of the sidecase. The clear coating on the windings can deteriorate and start to burn a dark color where the wiring terminates off of the wrapped coils and can begin to short out.

It's also a good idea to reseal the wires coming out of the case through the grommet from the inside if it has been seeping to any degree. Nows your chance.
