  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

OK. Battery took a dump in the trusty steed. Now then, any recommendations on a replacement? There's so many damned batteries out there it's confusing. What say you?

DO NOT BUY A BALLISTIC EVO2 8 cell! I went through 2 in a year and Ballistic switched to a prorated warranty. Stay far away from Ballistic. EarthX seems to be the most reliable with a real warranty. Did I mention that Ballistic sucks?;);)

What do you think of Ballistic?

I've had my battery problem (Ballistic) but they made good and I learned that no matter what brand you decide in the end - if you go with one of the new solid state batteries - be sure to mount it in foam so it doesn't vibrate. I had an issue with a 4 cell after 6 months - an intermittent short at middle rpms - the replacement 8 cell has been in for 15 months with no problems - mounted on foam.

We have had good luck with shorai batteries.not perfect luck with ballistic as their 4 cell has been problematic but the 8 cell has generally been good.the earth x batteries have been good but we have only sold a couple so our experience with them is limited.i do believe lithium batteries should be charged and balanced only by a lithium specific battery chargers.some of the problems I have experienced with them in the last two years are probably do to user error and misuse.dan

Well if vibration is a problem why do they advertise vibration/impact proof and able to mount in any position? My ballistics both internally self destructed to the point that you could hear something rattling around in there. Ballistic made good on the first battery but they wanted $78 plus shipping for the second one.
The EarthX batteries have internal circuitry that protects for over/under charging along with balancing. I don't know of any other lithium that has that feature built in. Not sure if they will handle vibes any better though.

MikeB is right, mount on foam if you can. I mounted my EarthX on foam... the foam came with it.
I did have to grind some plastic ridges down on the 310's battery holder, so the EarthX would fit inside.

How much did you grind? Just the ridges or some of the sides as well? I was waiting to see someone elses work before taking the dremel to mine.

Ah, I thought someone might ask.
Johnrg:
I just went out to the garage to look. I just ground the side ridges with my Dremel. It took me about 15 minutes. I just took a little off at a time until I could get it in. It's tight.
Also, 1) because the EarthX is not as tall as the stock Yuasa and
2) the seat has an underside ridge that holds down the battery, and I wanted a tight fit,
I used the foam pieces that came with the EarthX to position it.
I put one on the bottom of the battery box and one on the backside of the battery. That seemed to raise it enough and cushion it too.
Hope that helps.
Dave

Thanks for the input folks! The battery is in and turning 'er over like a champ. From the sound of things, the old battery was getting tired and I just didn't notice. And believe it or not, I found it at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $80! And it's gel. All is right with my world again.

What did you get?
