As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.
When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.
Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.
Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.
Thanks for your patience and support!
OK. Battery took a dump in the trusty steed. Now then, any recommendations on a replacement? There's so many damned batteries out there it's confusing. What say you?
DO NOT BUY A BALLISTIC EVO2 8 cell! I went through 2 in a year and Ballistic switched to a prorated warranty. Stay far away from Ballistic. EarthX seems to be the most reliable with a real warranty. Did I mention that Ballistic sucks?![]()
I've had my battery problem (Ballistic) but they made good and I learned that no matter what brand you decide in the end - if you go with one of the new solid state batteries - be sure to mount it in foam so it doesn't vibrate. I had an issue with a 4 cell after 6 months - an intermittent short at middle rpms - the replacement 8 cell has been in for 15 months with no problems - mounted on foam.
How much did you grind? Just the ridges or some of the sides as well? I was waiting to see someone elses work before taking the dremel to mine.MikeB is right, mount on foam if you can. I mounted my EarthX on foam... the foam came with it.
I did have to grind some plastic ridges down on the 310's battery holder, so the EarthX would fit inside.

Thanks for the input folks! The battery is in and turning 'er over like a champ. From the sound of things, the old battery was getting tired and I just didn't notice. And believe it or not, I found it at O'Reilly Auto Parts for $80! And it's gel. All is right with my world again.
