  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2008 Smr 510 stalling problems

Mardmario

Husqvarna
Hey everyone, I am new to the motard scene, and i just picked up a 2008 smr 510 with 2850 on her. When i bought the bike ran great. I road the bike around town probably about 20 miles and when i stopped at a stop light after idling for a bit it would die. Not a problem start it back up and lets go..

Then i went to take it out one more time before the seasons end every time i would start slowing down it would die with a little popping, then it would start right back up. Got a little further and the problem got worse. It sounds like the fuel would just cut out even at like 15 miles an hour or around turns even with the clutch in trying to give it gas to keep it alive, it would still die. Time to turn around and go home.

on my way back home it died, and would not start back up, i fiddled with the idle screw and nothing.

They guy told me he had a piston failure around 1800 miles he showed me all of the proof that he had the work done. I found a forum on cafe husky from the guy i bought i from said he has a piston failure and when the guy re did the motor the cam timing was off, he said he fixed it on the forum and that the bike was perfect (about a year before i picked up the bike)

The bike has the arrow exhaust, power up kit and a power commander. I was wondering if any one has had a similar issue and knows a way to fix it. I checked the valves and they seemed to be within spec, i was told it could be the fuel mixture, i have not reset the power commander yet, but thats my next attempt at the solution.

Can anyone give me some advise or personal experience similar to the problems i have been having.
Other questions
—where should that idle screw/ be set
zipty reflash available? i have read about that seemed to fix new bikes problems.

any advise would be much appreciated.

2008 510 has Mikuni efi, to work on that bike an iBeat is needed. You could search for 'semco ibeat' and it is possible Semco still sells an iBeat, or it is possible you could find a dealer or someone local that has an iBeat.

I'm fairly sure that Zy Ty is familiar with the 449/511 type bikes which are much newer, but I really doubt they know much about your bike.

Will the bike start and run good when its completely cold?

Can you take the red cam chest cover off and take a pic of the cams when the bike is set to TDC, like this one

I had the same problem, and it was a weak cell in the battery. Check the voltage at the battery with the bike not running and the switch in the off position. You should see about 13 volts. If it's less than that remove the ground connection at the terminal and check again. If it's the same, your battery needs to be replaced. If it's higher, you likely have a short somewhere.

If you have to replace the battery, pay the extra $$ to get one of the Lithium Ion batteries.

The guy i bought it from had put a light weight lithium Ion Battery. But ill check the voltage that does sound like it could possibly be a solution because when i would go to start it back upi would almost click and stop cranking over, then nothing, then nothing again, giggle the bike again then boom fire right up. Im going to look in to this tonight. I'll let you know how it goes.

Im going to try that before i start taking the bike apart since I'm not the most mechanically incline person, have no problem taking it apart, but i have trouble getting it back together

So I went and tested the battery and there was a bad cell in the battery and I replaced it. But I still will not turn over any other advise?

When you say, "will not turn over.", what exactly are the symptoms? Does it crank, but not fire. Or do you still have the problem of the starter not cranking the engine? Does the new battery show 13+ volts when the bike is not running? Can you kick/push start the bike?

The more info we have the more likely we can provide help. A video (with sound) of an attempted start would be best.

IN any case, don't loose heart here. This is likely a simple thing.

It cranks just doesn't fire up, like theres no spark, or its not getting fuel, I noticed on the power commander there are some lights blinking, maybe a loose connection around there or is that normal. i can here the fuel pump whine. battery is also at 14 volts its brand new the old one put out 9.3 with a bad cell. it was $140 for the lithium battery with my works commercial discount.

So i pulled the plug and grounded it to the head and i did get a blue spark, should i continue and check the timing?

I doubt there's anything wrong with the timing.

When you turn the key on, do you hear the fuel pump whir/hum loudly and strongly?

Turn the key on, then press the kill button, then press it again, does the fuel pump cycle on and then off with each press of the kill button?

Yea is does hum when you turn the ignition on and off/kill switch and cycle through. I just check the valves and they were in spec, and i also checked the timing when i got into it. they all seemed to be inline, I think it is the power commander, we fiddled with the wires and it fired right up. I want to take the power commander out, i don't know what i need to take out and what i needs to be plunged into what.

Figured it out. It was loose connection in the power commander, either that or bad gas, i drained the tank and put fresh gas in it, as well as putting some electrical tape around one of the connectors on the power commander. She's running, and has been idling for about 5 minutes now. Pretty happy guy as of right now. But thanks everyone for there help! i learned a lot about the mechanics go of the machine.
