  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

2000 cr125 ratcheting noise at idle?

huskylove

Husqvarna
Pro Class
Just installed a pro circuit nature friendly silencer, and a fast by ferraci clutch basket on my cr125.

It is now about 100x quieter than the wide open race pipe with no packing.

Problem is now at idle I can hear a distinct grinding "ratcheting" noise from the engine.

I asked a friend he said the big end bearing is toast! Asked another; he said its the powervalve rattling and its normal. His kdx sounded like that since forever ago.

Starts first kick and runs perfect everytime. Without the choke fires right up and ready to rock.

BUT, I do not want to take it out way in the hills (2 hour drive by truck) if this thing is going to shit the bed?

Its kind of like the noise the kick starter makes when it retracts, but slower and not very pronounced.

Any ideas? Should I just tear it down? I had the top end off and everything was in spec and it had I think around 180 on the compression with 3-4 fast kicks so I do not think the reeds are broken. Rings were in spec, no slop in the rod or anything. Ran fantastically since the day I bought it.

This 900$ dirt bike is up to nearly 2000$ I would hate to throw more at it at this point.

Dont think its much to worry about my 360 sounds like someone's rattling change in a can.
Not my big end bearings or crank shafts they are less than 25hrs old and sounds like that.

That said i dont know what the sound is my guess is the pistons changing direction and thats what you can hear... Like i said i dont know but my bike sounds similar.

that cr sounds horrible...maybe its normal but i have never heard one that loud. then again i only have one bike with a power valve. my 360 makes a similiar sound but its very very quiet and only does it cold. you have to put your head down by the powervalve area to hear it. that cr sounds like its louder than the exhaust.
i have taken motors down before and found a bit of play in the crank, never made noises tho. i would think for a crank to make a noise it would have to be ready to really let go.
the noise you hear is probably the pv

Mine is very quiet also.....Seems to run good, but the new slip on may have affected jetting? Didnt think it would...

if its the same style it shouldnt, but going from a spark type to a straight core or vice versa usually will.
you are probably just hearing a small amount of pv noise.

Gotcha, went from straight with no packing and exhaust leaks to a spark arrestor style pro circuit. It seemed like it did not quite want to rev out on the top end. With a 2 smoker is that lean or rich?

if it was jetted correctly with the leaks and straight thru deal, it is probably a bit rich now. one size on the main will probably have it singing again

I will look into it, gotta pull the carb and check jets I think. Its always run quite rich. no choke to start etc. What about lowering the needle since that takes only a second?

you want to get the main right first, then work your way down. the needle wont really help with top end, but the main can help with midrange. not familiar with your carb but there should be a plug on the bottom to access the main jet by tilting the carb. if you arent real solid on jetting a two stroke you should read up on it some..changing a jet because one is easier to access is not really how it works

Gotcha Read up on it and see that the needle height changes the timing from the pilot/air to the main. So now I have to figure out if I am getting lean bog or rich bog. It just is totally dead from 20% throttle up for a second then it gets on the main/pipe and rails. I think its rich. Like the pilot is too large, so you open the throttle andit runs really rich and takes a second or two to burn through the extra fuel then takes off like a fucking rocket.

Yes?

Yes if it goes bwoorraaaaaa then its a rich bog
If it sounds crackly then its lean it will also throttle hang when you snap it shut...

Definitely rich bog. Thanks for the help so far guys. It runs awesome on the pipe wide open, so maybe not mess with the 400 main?

What speed does this happen at if its up to 25-35 mph that should be around 1/8 1/4 throttle so pilot jet but the main will be opening up. I hate jetting so i tapped out and got a lectron.

Yea I sent that guy who had a lectron he was trying to sell a message saying I want it. I think if anything it would be a bit easier to figure out.

One of my riders has a 2002 CR250 and it does not make that noise. It did make funny clutch noises/issues until I went to 850cc of 0W40.

if it runs fine up top your main is probably fine. the needle position and needle size controls mostly the midrange. the pilot/airjet circuit controls starting, idling and throttle response mostly.
altering the needle position basically controls how fast the needle is pulled out of the main when you open the throttle.
its very hard to guess these things online but if i had to guess i would lean the needle a clip. this means lower the needle by the raising the clip a notch. take note of where its at. if its only doing it at small throttle openings it could be the pilot circuit. remember on most carbs there is some overlap on all the circuits
you can also get a symptom like this if the powervalve is out of adjustment.
