  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

09 Husky TE450 electrical problem

Hi all, have only had my bike 4 months, bought it in excellent condition and love it BUT

Was 3/4 way through first serious bush ride after replacing the battery when I went to start bike and ignition was totally dead. Had to get lift of shame back to camp.

Borrowed a spare second hand battery and it went fine for rest of weekend. In fact the bike seemed to charge the second hand battery as initially it didnt have enough charge to use the electric start the bike but after 30 min riding it did.

I assumed it was a faulty new battery however when i got home I charged the new battery and had it tested at the bike shop I bought it from and they said it was OK. My multimeter says 12.8 volts. I put it back in and the bike is starting fine, although I haven't been on a serious bush ride to test it.

I'm wondering if there is a common fault with wiring etc that I need to check on this model? Regulators and staters are very expensive for this model!!

Cheers DJ

Hi all, The battery had an intermittent fault - gotta love an easy fix!
Curious...what brand of battery??? I think I may have a similar issue with a Shorai. Not while riding but sometimes it sits for weeks and holds a charge and other times it dies while sitting.

The brand was called Roadstar- it's just a standard battery that weights as much as small bear.
Koala that is - I'm in Australia!
They said something about the internal strap in the battery failing.

Now up to third new battery and still have same problem! Been to 2 different workshops second one used IBeat, both times new battery installed and bike runs well for a ride or two then battery fails.-Not happy! Must be something in the charging system only when bike heats up. Shows FAIL on dash. Regulator?
Anyone had an intermittent or heat related electrical fault that causes batteries to fail?

No - good idea OHR. Will try to hook one up if I can get my bike started again. I think the battery shakes around too much in the cradle which may not help it or connections either. Put some extra foam between seat and battery to hold it tighter last ride but didn't seem to solve problem.

Hey OHR is there a particular small waterproof voltmeter that you could recommend for my bike?
Could you try strapping it to the bars with cable/zip ties and run the wires under the seat? That way you could see he readout while riding.
The wiring insulation on a fair few areas rubs away pretty easily on these bikes. Could you be maybe earthing out under certain conditions? I.e after a puddle or a jolt from a jump/bump?

You would be really unlucky to have 3 dud batteries. More likely your stator isn't charging or you are earthing out, maybe the multimeter while riding is your best bet to see if you are losing volts after the bike has been running.

I use a a cigar lighter attachment, and a $10 plug-in voltmeter, I only use it when I want to monitor what's going on with the bike. You can tell the bike is running by the 14.6 showing on the voltmeter.

Bike shop has replaced O2 resistor and faulty temp sensor to get bike running again. also tested charging system again and reckon regulator and stator are fine. So they have by passed the wiring harness by running new wiring from the regulator to the battery. Will drive down and get bike back and test on the weekend.

Duggeoy I agree with you about certain conditions possibly causing fault. I still think it prudent to ride around with a voltmeter for the next few rides. Will figure out some way of monitoring battery charge for the weekend.

OHR great setup to remove voltmeter when not needed. I guess you could use plug for other purposes too!

Hopefully my next post will be a good one!

I also would be checking that wiring harness, it was replaced on my bike. No problems since.

I have had the same problem with my 08 te 450, went thrugh a handful of batteries before we realised that the part of the seat meant to hold the battery down was actually crushing the battery and causing an internal failure, I cut this part of the seat off and made my own bracket to hold the battery down. I believe it is a common problem so there may be more info on it

Great tip 13101093, that makes sense. I have changed brand of battery and put foam padding between battery and seat. So far so good after 3 rides.

Well 3 rides and bike going well. I have been checking the charging system on my bike and it is constantly charging at 14.9V when running. When turned off straight after the last good ride the battery was reading 13.2V. Does anyone know if the is an acceptable range or a little high?

14.9 seems a little high, I've got 3 bikes I can monitor with my voltmeters, I've used 3 different meters on 3 different bikes and have never seen 14.9.

13.2 is not bad for a new, freshly charged battery, I've seen that on mine, they usually settle down to 12.8 or 12.9
