You're lucky to have gotten that piece out. Here's a longer thread on the subject: http://www.cafehusky.com/threads/check-those-rh-side-oil-screens-fellas.67913/ Glad it's working out for you.
Wow Eric. That’s scary. Thanks for the link. Now I’m worried about the replacement part. I guess I’ll have to keep an eye on it
It is a scary thought but, as with anything, it's all about keeping things in perspective (in that while this seems to be a not uncommon issue, it's not widespread either.) As far as I know I'm the only one who experienced a somewhat catastrophic failure- everyone else, I think, caught the piece (as you did.) After the headaches I went through I considered running w/out it (and still think that would be fine) but I did put in a new one. That's been in here ever since (at about 20K miles on my 630, now, so it's been in there for approx. 11K miles.) I'm hoping/planning to do some winter maintenance items this season so will pull it out and check it soon (I think the last time I had it out was around 3K or so miles ago, and all was fine.) So yeah- just keep an eye on it. I usually pull mine to have a look every third oil change (used to do every other, but there's never anything on that screen.) And by the way- I've pulled that engine cover many times and have re-used the original gasket many times- never any issues/leaks.
