Great thread. I have been watching and I think this build thread will finally launch me into action on the 81 XC.430.
My tank is way too nice to redo though.:notworthy:

IMO the stickers are too shiny....

prefer it with stickers, actually balances the look of the bike and lets your eyes focus on the beauty of the bike as a whole, very good job.
now get a chain on it and cover it in mother earth.whos the dude with the pointy head?.

Wow, it looks awesome either way. It does have a more classic look with the chrome panels, but a factory look witht the all red tank. I would like to see it with the white number plates. I guess I'm old school and like the classic husky look. You did a great job on this bike.

Me , switch out the blue /yellow ribbons that were on tank ( originally) for silver/black . Keep the 83 look but new and modern version. If you had the white side plates you could extend them silver/ black down the plates like original. Since you have black side plates, produce them for side panes in red/silver . But line up the stripe at tank and side plate, silver to silver and black to red.

Then do your front and side plates in silver background and red numbers .

Skip the chrome stickers, but go with the black Bel-Ray centered on the side like the Billy Grossi bike.

i would put something on the tank, whether it be the chrome or stripes...those chrome ones really do a nice job of finishing the bike off....looks great

Hey Darty, I thinks silver and Gold ribbons would look good too. Silver would tie into the frame and gold to the rims.

The votes on the tank were interesting. I have the build on another site and did the same thing. Chrome was the choice 2 to 1. But I don't know what I will do with it anyway.

So now some more fun begins. Fine tuning of the bike and correcting little stuff.

First thing is taking a small amount off the pipe side number plate. It was hitting the pipe so I trimmed a little off it to keep it away from the pipe.

I took a small propane torch to the edge of the plastic to smooth it out after the cut.

I messed with the chain guide that Ron's brother Bill made, to center it on the sprocket. He had the foresight to make the spacers two different size's so it is adjustable. Red lines point to them.

Over this past weekend I had family over for our Christmas. We do it early as the grand kids and kids have other places to go.

I worked on the carb as I broke the main jet holder when I went through the carb. I found one on evilbay for a cheap price. Figured I would set the float level while I am back in the carb. I remembered it was overflowing when I bought it.

Got the rear wheel on with all the proper spacers and did a real test fit. I should be getting the chain this week.

My next to oldest grandson decided to stay with us for a few days. He wanted to learn how to do some of the stuff I am doing on the bikes. So I turned him loose with the blast cabinet and taught him how to prep parts for plating. He looks a little like he is not enjoying himself here, but I'm sure he was. I just don't think he is very photogenic. Ha

While he was doing prep work I made some end caps for the rear of the frame I cut the hoop off of. I made them a few thousandths larger than the bore to make it a press fit.

All installed. They will look slick.

I think the one mistake I have made in messing with zinc plating........is I'm getting a little carried away. I think I am done with plating on this bike.

The grandson spent close to two hours plating a clutch spring and these 8 bolts. He did a grand job.

I was off work early yesterday and went down to the bike shop and bought a new DID chain. I was almost going to go with a gold one, but couldn't bring myself to doing it. Set the axle adjustment in place and put the chain on and inserted the brake rod. I will be taking it all apart as I have a swingarm mounting bolt correction I have to make.

    More to come.
