  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Your Last Ride: Where, with what, how'd it go.

I think you were supposed to start :)

Last week I rode in a new area (to me) in Fountain, CO. I was riding on my new (to me) 2011 TE250! It was the perfect place for a test ride. Nice singletrack with some hairpin turns, tons of whoops, hard pack, deep sand, rocks, logs, and plenty of branches to hit me :). First time I've ridden in real singletrack since I was a teenager. Most are trails for ATV's and more wide open stuff. It was a really fun mix and wore me out quickly lol. Needless to say, I'll be going back :).

Last weekend, we rode in a small urban area, maybe 20-30 acres, with 2 creeks running thru it, tight trails, lotsa creek crossings, I've biffed a few times at this place, last week, our best rider biffed going down into the creek, gassed it on a rock deflection, and dove into the deep end.

Maiden voyage of my new (to me) TXC 250. Went and picked up the tag for a local motorcycle/riding game (the rubber ducky)

Then went and hit some dirt roads. Took a break next to this huge ass rock. I wasn't expecting there to be snow up here still and the trials tire does not do well in it haha.

Then came back into town and dropped off the ducky for the next rider to find.

First ECEA hare scramble of the year, hosted by the Tri County Sportsmen MC. This was also my first ride on my '14 TXC 310R beyond putting around in my yard. Long, 10+ mile laps of almost all new single track. The weather held off, with mid-40's temps, and a little rain on the final lap. Great run, great conditions, great bike! Excellent power from the 310, with great handling and suspension action (all with the stock springs!) I was very concerned that the stiff TXC suspension valving would result in lots of front end deflection, but that was totally not the case. Very confidence inspiring. Loving this bike!

Unloaded at Marin side of Golden Gate Bridge, San Francisco. Rode across bridge to SF. Tooled around the city streets down to AT&T Park (home of the SF Giants). Back along the peers to Fisherman's Wharf. Stopped for shrimp cocktail. Rode through SF Presidio, then back across GG bridge to Marin. 20 min break. Then out along the narrow coastal road through the Marin Headlands out to the beach. Then back.

First real dual sport ride on the bike. Great time!

Sunday,
Carnegie OHV park, Nor Cal.

Great weather, great traction, no dust, lot's of riders, lots of energy in the park: party atmosphere.
Bike ran great for 15 minutes... Then...

Near the top of a long, steep climb... Hi-RPM sustained for approx 15 seconds. Motor: "STUMBLE... STUMBLE... BACK FIRE... stall... wont' start, won't start, won't start.
1/3 mile push back to the truck (OK, some of it was downhill and I coasted. Still!).
Won't start. Will start. YA! Runs like crap. "Stumble, stumble, backfire, stall".
Multiple TPS resets.... Starts! "Stumble, backfire, stall, won't start." Repeat x 5 till I give up.

I HATE crap that breaks down for no good reason! Not only ruins the ride but destroys confidence in the machine.

Did you figure out what happened?

I think so, but I haven't been able to do a full warmed up test. During the installation of my PCV, the mechanic (I didn't put it in) didn't plug in the wires into the coil far enough; so that they clip in. So, vibration and time worked the wires out and the voltage was having to jump an ever-growing gap until... it couldn't. I plugged it back in until it clipped in and she fired right up. I didn't post anything because I need to make sure that was the problem and, like I said, I haven't been able to take it out for an extended ride yet.

A couple weeks ago I went to Death Valley. Didn't do much dirt, but I had a great time. It was my 3rd time there. I'd like to go back and do a lot more dirt sometime soonish, probably next year, though. Maybe this fall.

Last November on my 2010 TE450.
Went to Cat lake near Sqamish BC , just warming up on a little trail and managed to fall 8ft down a bank.
Landed on a log and dislocated my shoulder, awaiting surgery to fix the five muscles and ligaments I've torn.
Probably be next November before I ride again :-(
On the bright side it wasn't far back to the truck then Sqamish ER

Damn dude, hope your recovery goes well! My last ride was back in November too. Tore out of camp at night on my nephew's banshee (liquored up a bit), whacked a puckerbush, flipped that thing, flew farther in the air than I ever have before in my life, landed, broke my pelvis in 2 places, broke #5 rib in my back and jacked up my previous broken knee from years ago. Riding in the desert for the first time since this weekend. 2 wheels only, no boozed up nighttime quad rides for me again.

What the F is with the desire to tear ass on ATVs when boozed up. It's crap like this that got the CPSC fired up about three wheelers back in the '80s. Hope you learned your lesson. Preach your new wisdom to all the other idiots out there.

Eh, seems a little harsh. I think we've all done things we knew weren't the smartest, but at least the guy owns it and isn't making excuses...nor condoning it...and on top of that learned the hard way. Sure, I get it, things like this can give off-roading a bad rep, but unless I hear otherwise I would (if we're making assumptions) err in his favor in assuming the fella doesn't make it a habit to do bone-headed things, and wouldn't leap right into name calling.

Because its so easy and fun:D...smart...noway, but shit happens and people do dumb things. Usually, dumb things= getting hurt and learning we all do it one way or another.

My last ride was knoxville ohv in california. We stayed in my friends property within the blm land. I worked on some private trails and did a couple badass hill climbs. eventually got tired and thirsty in the heat and went back to camp, just to get sorta stuck on a ridge. Ended up going down the steep loose hill and dropping my bike multiply times the bottom. I followed the canyon till i had a short steep climb over to the main canyon exit. I punched it up the rock shelf and flew off the back flipping the bike almost in a 360, where it landed directly on the headlight. It broke the whole headlight assembly off. had to disconect everything and one hand it up some tight trails back to camp. Later, after a couple holes and zipties it was good as new:rolleyes: and we hit some trails out in the park. B:D asic light riding trip.

last weekend, '09 te310, Cedro Peak OHV trails outside of Albuquerque NM. got 2 miles from the house, clutch went out. rode another 35ish miles of fun rocky singletrack with no clutch. came home and ordered a rekluse. install tomorrow.

Hope you can find harder trails..the rekluse is an easy button susbstitute.

Damn, sorry to hear this man, hope you get recuperated fully and can enjoy many more years of 2 wheels.

Sounds bad Ben :( ... You, like most of us old guys, know better ... Best to keep the crashing while sober I think ... All that down time, ESP for us old guys, is not a good way to keep our bodies going ... Get well and remember 2-wheelers crash also ...

--
I ate it yesterday also but no breaks ... When I hit the ground pretty much face first, I seemed to get a small headache for a short time ... This head pain does not usually happen with me ...

This clayey dirt has good and bad points for riding ... Getting hard as cement is not a good point.
CamansiFreeway_Crash_4t.jpg

I moved on to this area after the crash and slide off the path on this slick off-chamber small uphill ... Again nothing broke but it took about 15 minutes for me to get the bike back on the trail and keep if from sliding downhill across someones corn field ..
496_0469.JPG

Then I stopped here for pain-reliever (Beer) ... But they had none!! ... I was amazed no beer so my stay was short ...
496_0478.JPG

On my slow ride back home, I found this place to sort of chill and listen to the water run ...

Ride safe (and maybe a tad slower?) boys and girls ... Down time is a bummer ....
