  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

x-lite oil drain plug magnet ?

hillbilly

Husqvarna
AA Class
my11 te 250 oil drain plug is not magnetic so i went to dealer and ordered a new one . it came in today and guess what ? new husky plug same thing non-magnetic . does any one with a x-lite motor have a magnetic drain plug ? BTW my dealer is going to call his tech guy , but he thought it should be magnetic like the older model huskys !

then what is the screen for behind the drain plug ?

IMO, those little things don't provide much filtering. The just prevent a chunk from getting recirculated.

There's a reason 99% of vehicles don't have a magnetic plug. It's not necessary. If you look in the drained oil, you can see if there's metal in it or not. It's a nifty gimmick, but it's certainly not a critical component.

I some what agree . but both my new silverado and my wife's buick have magnets in the drain plugs ! but have never seen any metal on them . I just looked on the flash drive work shop manual that came with the bike and the instructions say . REMOVE OIL DRAIN PLUG AND FILTER, DRAIN THE OIL AND CLEAN THE PLUG MAGNET ,WASH THE FILTER WITH PETROL AND REFIT. Just thought i would ask and see if any one else had one with a factory magnet ? Was thinking the plug magnatized the metal screen filter ?

You don't need a magnetic plug, that's what the oil filter is for.

Maybe that's so, but every time I change my oil on a bike with a mag drain plug it has very fine and sometimes not so fine metal filings on it. I'd rather have it on the magnet than sitting at the bottom of my cases.

I don't think you can assume that it would be sitting in the bottom of the case w/o a magnet. But it doesn't hurt to have a magnet and having one makes checking for particles much more convenient.

I have made magnetic plugs in the past. Drill a hole in the center of the plug and insert a "rare" earth magnet with a bit of epoxy into the hole. Let it dry and you are set. "Zip Ty" is known to place magnets in different locations in the engine, using the same epoxy. I have placed them in the head near the oil drain back area and even in locations in the tranny area. You will be surprised what you may trap. I once found part of a snap-ring on the oil drain plug on my Auto. It was the one that held the kick starter idler gear on the shaft. It is the simple things we tend to overlook. I have found the magnets a my local Ace Hardware.

You can also glue a button-sized rare earth magnet to the _outside_ of the drain plug; it will quickly magnetize the plug and be just as effective. Again available at your local hardware store.

Thanks for all input and replys ! does any one know the size of the drain plug ? ZIP-TY makes one for the 04-09 te250. Side engine oil screen bolt. Size is 14mm X 1.5 X 13mm it looks like the same design as X-LIGHT drain plug . But i do not have metric thread pitch gage or bolt to compare . The rare earth magnet and epoxy is a very good idea ! THANKS
