  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

250-500cc WR300 Headlight and ignition issues?

Eaglefreek

Husqvarna
Pro Class
I've read some instances on a couple different forums of the ignition going bad while using the lights. I want to install my lights but I don't need them that bad if it will fry my ignition. I can't find anything definitive and I asked the dealer where I bought it and they know nothing about it. Any input would be appreciated.

The 2011s and newer come with the Ducati ignition and apparently some people are having a problem when using the lights.

No problems here w/my stock headlight or ignition on my '11 wr300, and I ride a lot of two track and single track in the woods w/lots of puddles in Northwest Washington State.

my dealer acts dumb.he does not want 2 admit husky has any problems

should not be an issue as the ignition and lights normally have different windings on the stator and should not effect each other.

Is this the case with the Ducati ignition? I hooked up just my headlight last week and immediately my bike became hard to start. Always started on first or second kick prior. I disconnected the headlight and it starts first kick again. Has anyone figured out what the heck is up with the Ducati igniton and why they changed from the previous type?

The bike becomes very hard to start once they are hooked up. The Ducati ignition just doesn't put out enough juice during start up because the light is taking some. I wired mine up with an on/off switch so once the bike is running I can turn them on. So far I have had no issues with the lights or ignition. I'm running full running and break lights, just have to keep it off when kicking it.[/quote]

I don't know much about motorcycle electronics, but is the lighting circuit and ignition circuit together? I thought they were usually separate?

It has to be. If I turn the lights off the bike starts no problem. Turn the switch on and it takes alot of kicking, but it will start. I messed around with it quit a bit and its definitely the difference between the switch being on or off.

i so had a thread about this.

yeah, hooking your head light up is a good way to spend a quick $209 on a new coil. was the final straw in my most recent husky experiance.

How long did you run it with the lights before the coil went out?

I have had zero problems with lights on an 09 300. I like having lights and just upgraded to the Polisport HMX dual LED light. Its about $100, waaaaaay brighter than the stock light, you could actually get home safely if stuck in dark, or ride in dark with it on singletrack. Best part, since LED, hardly draws any power and no oscillation with different RPMs. They are always on and not an issue. Except for a did fry one light once because my regulator got disconnected somehow when I crashed. BUT, I crash a lot, so whatchagonnado?? Pics attached. I have since rattle canned the chrome piece under light to be flat black. (first pic) IMAG1056.jpg IMAG1025.jpgIMAG1028.jpg

This light, since it hardly draws any power even though really bright, might be an easy way to run a better than stock light and not worry about your ignition.

I've definitely got at least 20 hours on my '12 with a headlight and no issues (yet).

I am, however, definitely going to add a switch and play around to see if it effects the starting at all, and that way I can turn the light off when I don't really need it (basically any time I'm not on the road).

Even though the lighting and ignition coils are independent, they are usually commonly grounded and can affect each other. Case in point, my 360 developed starting issues after I installed a new voltage regulator. When I connected the lighting coil output the idle would drop and then raise back up when I disconnected it. I haven't had a chance to verify it was the problem yet, but it's pretty likely.

Before you go through the trouble of putting a switch in you could try the same thing.

I remember following your thread on that issue. I' ve read that there was a wiring fix, but have yet to see any info on what the issue was and how Husky addressed it. Does anyone know how many watts the lighting coil puts out? I've seen posts with 130w and 55w.

i have the same problem with my 2011 WR 300 ,i put a trail tech switch for the headlamp, its nearly impossible to start unless the headlamp is switched off
