  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Just sold my ST1300 and Aprilia Falco.Have not been in the dirt since the 70's.I am 59 and won't be doing any racing.Weigh 150lbs without gear and have a 30" inseam.Planned riding will be 50/50 dirt and highway. Will need at least 120 miles to the tank so I know and aftermarket tank will have to be fitted. Will also need racks for camping gear.Am in the Boise area of Idaho and will be riding the Owyhees(spelled desolate, steep and rocky)and the north front. So 449-511-610-630 or KTM?

I don't know much about your terrain, but 50/50 riding with 120 mi. range requirement says 610/630 to me.

You can just about get that range without an aftermarket tank.

There is a duals port 650 coming out soon that should have a better maintenance schedule. It shares the BMW 650 motor but in a more dirt package. Just something else to look at since you still like riding some street.

desolate, steep and rocky.......depending on what shape your in, and considering your weight & age.....those 500cc + bikes are going to be way heavy. You really can't have the best of street & dirt with just one bike. Either you cruise comfortably at 75mph on the street or go smaller on the displacement (lighter) in the dirt.

At the time I purchased....KTM did not have a street legal dirt bike less than 450cc.....so I went with the TE250 as it is light, but the close ratio gears only allow 45mph cruising on the street.

I would look into the KTM 350 light (relatively speaking) and wide ratio gearing. By 2014 they should have the 2-stroke street legal bikes out.......and that will be perfect. Light, cheap & easy to maintain.

with a 29" inseem..... I installed a lower seat, lower profile tires, and a lowering link. The bike is easy to pick-up and plenty of power in the dirt.

I doubt 2-smokers will ever be street legal (at least in the states) since they are getting stricter and stricter on emissions/noise. The KTM 350 does look nice, but nearing 10k in price is just rediculous. I think you would be better off with a TE 449 since you will be carrying luggage around. The KTM 350 may do the trick, but with the price - you could get a TE 449 cheaper, does the same stuff with more power (better on street with luggage esp.). I have a TE 250 for woods riding and a little street (75-25 -see image that I took) - best handling bike ever. But like Dale said - 'cruises' at 45mph. The TE 449's are only around 30 lbs heavier and will 'cruise' @ 70.

Thanks for the replies.I don't have towing capabilities so the bike will be street ridden to the mountains.Even our secondary roads are posted at 65mph.The local dealer doesn't stock the TE models just the TC449.I agree on the KTM pricing.Guess I will be intimate with oil changes as I usually log 15-20k miles a year with no long trips involved.

I know that area and i would not be riding a 610/630 there unless i had to. 449/511 would be my choice and you can get 120 with a nomad tank strapped on. The 449/511 is FAR lighter and more nimble than the 610/630 but not as good on the street. IMHO i would trade some street worthiness for some trail fun. Great do it all bike and far less expensive than a KTM. The KTM's usually have better (wider) trans and more tank options though.

This is one great do it all bike. I have ridden 230 miles days dual-sporting and also ridden it on super gnar that separates the boys from the men. this bike handles it all. If it carried .5 more fuel and 5th and 6th were taller gears this bike would be near perfect.
