• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

When does your radiator fan switch on ?

I think there is a problem with my fan its only been on about 4 times in 4000K
all four times were in thick grass/slow going and there was coolent coming out before the fan
came on!

I am thinking of putting manual switch on. Any idears?

Mine comes on in the mountains on long windy gravel roads, usually when the going gets slow. So far, it always cools the bike down and then shuts off.

Mine comes on in Atlanta traffic (stop and go) very frequently. When I'm in constant motion, even below 20mph on the trail...it never cuts on. All about keeping wind moving over that radiator :)

I cracked radiator open for kicks tonight while wiring in some grip heaters. Turned out I was low in the radiator. Burped and filled. Wasn't overheating, but it is now as it should be. Better to check it than to assume it is correctly filled.

My fan has only started when I was in heavy stop and go traffic for an extended period. Then, it was running about 90 percent of the time. As soon as traffic started moving, no more fan. 'Guess it's doing it's job.

I have a 2012 511 txc fan has never turned on, the rad cap was stuck some how so it would not boil over. The first time I pulled the cap the rubber washer that seals the cap was stuck to the radiator. The coolant level was fine , I put a new 1.8 bar cap (stock pressure) back on and the bike boiled over every time I went out. I switched to a 2 bar 30 psi instead of 20 psi. The bike has not boiled over but does get too hot. Just rewired the fan to a manual switch. Just a side note, thought I could cut the wires to the thermal switch on the radiator and run them to a manual switch. NOT !! the bike wont run with that radiator sensor out of the loop:naughty:

Not sure with a 511 but the Terra does not have a separate switch. It has a coolant temp sensor, using the ECU to switch on the fan. Sounds like you cut into that. Ouch!
By using a higher pressure cap, you have raised the boiling point of the coolant. Does the 511 have a temp gauge/indicator?

The TXC does not have temp indicator. Yes , the ecu should turn on the fan but doesn't . So I installed the switch.

Anyway, my fan is working well, it is not ready to low heating quickly.. Terra is over heating, much more than my last NX 650 air cooling.

How do you know? Is it boiling over? I don't think anybody has correlated the temperature display to actual temperatures, but unless you know it's getting over the 05-110 C (220 to 230 F) range...I think most cooling systems are designed to run up to this temperature. I've run across many people over the years that think because it's over halfway on the indicator....that's automatically bad or something.

Personally, I've noticed the fan will come on in traffic on nice summer day and when I'm going relatively slowly up mountain roads. It's working as expected.

The "manual" says to check the oil level to allow the bike to idle for 3 minutes after the fan kicks on...then turn off and check the oil level. I remember trying to get my fan to come on in winter and took forever. I thought it was broken..but it did finally turn on.

The heat from the engine when you stop is much strong than NX650 air cooling or kawa KLE500 water cooling system. It has something to do with the
main pipe from the cilinder, to close to left leg. I have said the fan works perfectly, but Terra is dificult to cool in a hot day below 30km/h, which is very
hot to ride in the city.. however bike runs great when it is frozen..

Regarding the fan... can it stay on for a bit when the bike isn't running, even if the key is switched on? Mine doesn't seem to, but this is a tough thing to "test" (plus, I don't really want to test it).
My other bike's fan will stay on for a couple minutes after the bike is shut off, which I like (and, it makes sense).

Sorry, key on, engine off (using the kill switch) the fan will run. Key off, engine off, the fan won't run.
