• Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

What Oil?

I use Honda factory Oil 10W40. I'd stay away from the Spectro Gold - the shit foams up in both my Husky & Honda. Don't know if it's a REAL problem or not, but it just doesn't sit right with me...

I change mine often and unlike many I have used several differant brands. Never had any issues with any of them so far. I've used Motorex 20w50, Spectro 20w50, and Shell Rotella 15w40. I have never noticed any diff. in how the bike runs. Rotella is very inexpensive and can be found Walmart, I bought it at Pep Boys.

In the summer I do lean towards the 20w50 just because it's pretty hot when I'm out not sure if it really matters since i change my oil so often. I'm no expert so I am sure someone will chime in

Coffee, how many days did that take :D

I take it I wasnt supposed to ask that question? Too noobish?

Sorry...but i searched here and there and couldnt find any decent threads with such basic information.

That's OK, it's just an on-going inside type joke about oil threads on forums....I'm sure Kelly meant no offense.
Since I am here, I use Shell Rotella in my 07 TE450.
I have been around vehicles and have been a mechanic all my life. My Pop opened his Garage up in 1949 and I grew up with a wrench instead of a rattle in my hand.
Although that may not mean much to some folks:rolleyes:

Rotella 5-40 synth here as well. I'm probably going to burn in hell for it because it's not expensive enough ;)

true.

Oil debates are endless and no one really knows unless they are a chemist who has tested all used oil and has a 10 year database supporting the findings. So, that said oil is whatever you hope it is. The safe bet is get the good motorcycle specific oil like Motorex. Lot's of us successfully use off the shelf department store oil with fine results. My take is all motors are demanding now, small, high reving turbo, diesel, etc. I have trouble believing most any modern oil would not do the job. Change it a lot and you'll be fine with most any oil. Try to avoid "friction modified" oil as it may make your wet clutch slip.

It's just an inside joke because there really is no answer everyone agrees on... It is definitely a valid question.

Heres some more stuff to consider:

When braking in the bike, use an oil with a detergent. This is slightly more abrassive and will aid in the break in process.

Then switch to a synthetic or blended petrolium/synthetic.

I usually use Spectro, and thats worked for me. But i agree there are many brands that will do just fine. I change the oil every 500-600 miles. New filter every other change.

I also do a very careful warmup before i take off. This means the cover of the oil filter is warm to just hot-then i start riding.

Just some more ideas about oil.

As for the newbie question--theres nothing wrong with asking about oil**************************************** :)

Shell Rotella T 5W-40 synth. Can get at Wal-Mart for $20.00 a gallon. Like everyone is saying the key is to change the oil often. There is no substitute for clean oil no matter the brand. Just be sure to stay away from many automotive oil as they contain friction modifiers which could cause issues with the clutch.

Oh God, I'm offline for a day and there's 15 posts on "what oil to use". What is this place turning into?

Oh man I love it, now for the smart remarks. I use the oil after I drain it from my air cooled Volkswagen. You know its good after 1500 miles of that. No really, I use what George at uptite said to use. Call him, he will tell you.

I use the Spectro too as George recommended. I laughed out loud at Kelley and Coffee's response though!

Oil, grips, chain lube and air filters, spark plugs, tires and tubes, handlebars, steering dampers, mufflers, seats and footpegs... pickled eggs, grunge bands, beer, presidential candidates and porn stars. Wax on... wax off.

"My fill in the blank is better than yours" "Yours sucks ass and if you don't try my fill in the blank you are a complete tool".

I have irrefutable proof of this, right here on this Amsoil website.
