  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

what is the correct tank size or fuel capacity for 1982 1/2 500CR versus other 1982-1983 Husky's?

Hi, I have a chance to buy a rough 1982 1/2 500CR Silverstreak. Before I commit, just doing an assessment, what is there now, and what parts will be needed to restore it. The tank on there now is not original, looks to be a large capacity 1982? 430XC? It is black with silver pin stripe around the center brushed aluminum. It is kinda rough, but could be easily restored. But, if it is the same tank as the correct size silver streak one, that would be good, just repaint in correct colors? My other option would be use one of my 1983 tanks I currently have, just strip off the white paint, refinish in silver if they are the same other than the color? I have both nos 250cr and nos 500xc tanks. So, just wondering if anyone has a list of tank capacities for the various 1982 and 1983 bikes? I know they made many different sizes and models, 125, 175, 250, 430, 500, in CR/XC/WR, but I would think they are mostly the same tank other than the paint and maybe 3 different capacities? The good part of this bike is it does run, still has the 4spd, has the correct pipe in decent shape, has the correct 44mm Mikuni and the matching carb boots inlet and outlet, and decent looking oem shocks. If I buy it will post pictures.
Thanks, Joe

The original tank on my silver streak is the same exact size as the enduro size tanks.
If you sit a 250 Cr tank to the enduro one you can tell the difference. I think they went all larger tanks in 83 before converting to plastic. My 83 cr 250 was the larger size and was original. But I did not like how it fit with the seat to slide up on it and also had a big dent in the side. So I cut both sides and took about 1/2 inch out of mine. Actually, looks better matching seat.

There are three sizes of the '81-'83 tanks, 2.7, 2.9 and 3.3 gallon.

The '81-'83 CRs 125-430 used 2.7g tanks, all sizes of '81-'82 XC and WRs used 2.9g tanks, in '83 all 125/175s and 250CR got the 2.7, the 250 XC/WR got the 2.9g tank and the big bikes got the 3.3g tank. I am not sure if the '82.5 500CR came with a 2.7 or a 2.9g tank, but I would guess 2.7.

I think your pretty close to size Kartwheel, cause I'm looking at the biggest right behind me. It was also the size on my 83cr 250 original. But they could of thrown what ever they had in the era? That is why I cut mine down cause it was too big. It is very noticeable against the 83 seat.
I've got the smaller ones that came on my 125's and 250's. So it has to be a 2.9?

I am not positive there were 3 sizes in '83, but I know for sure all the 125/175s and the 250CR came with 2.7 and the 430-500 came with 3.3. I am not 100% sure the 250XC/WR had a 2.9, it might have had the 3.3 also.

The 83 250wr had the larger white metal tank. The 83 250cr had the smaller metal tank that was the same shape or design as the larger tank only smaller. I had both bikes.

There were 3 sizes, the '83 250CR had the same 2.7 tank as previous years painted white, what I dont know for sure is if they retained the 2.9 for the 250XC/WR (which was the biggest tank in '81-'82) or if all the larger tanks were the new 3.3 tank.

I have a pic of my 83 250cr somewhere all restored. The smaller white metal tank looked good on the bike.

The 82 1/2 spec sheet says 2.7. May hold 2.7 but tank is shaped larger than standard 2.7

I have every tank either on my bikes or on shelves.

250 cr is smaller in shape:

The silver streak tank is larger than 250 cr tank but not as big as the 3.3.

Now measuring both tanks that are original on my silver streak. The silver streak and my original 430 cr are same size.

You have to remember that some of these bike were mixed match with parts.

Here is spec sheet:

The 83 tanks have the petcock/fuel valve moved farther forward about 1-1 1/2" compared to the 81/82 tanks in order to make room for the newer style side panel number plates. So the 83 tanks are not the same as the 81-82 tanks. 83 CR's all used the 2.7 tank including the 500CR. The 83 125WR and XC also used the 2.7 tank. The All of the other 83 WR's and XC's used the 3.2 gal tank. Hope this helps.

Yes, it does. The '83 175 WR and XC also had the 2.7 tank.

The parts manual for the 82.5 500CR shows a # 1514082-05 part number for the tank and the #1514082 would indicate is the 82 WR/XC tank number and it shows 11 liter or 2.9 gallons. So which should we trust the spec sheet or parts list? Any one have an all original/unmolested 82.5 500CR to verify this?

Marty

I'm not sure if we can trust the spec sheet at that time of the manufacturer years it's known that husky put what ever they had in the inventory to make complete bikes. It is what it is.

I have 2 untouched stock silver paint 500 tanks. Both are smaller than my 83 250 XC and seem the same size as a 81 Blue XC 250 tank i own.
Wish i could pull the bikes out and look but they are stuck in the shed behind a snow bank at the door.

Actual measurement of original 1982.5 CR500 tank = just over 12 litres, filled right to the brim.

Hi guys, thanks for all the quick response. Sifting through all the info here, I think the tank I want is the 2.9 gallon, or 11 liter one from 1981-82. It is all really kinda confusing, as the magazine tests from back in the day list 2.7/2.8/2.9 gallons. And Husqvarna's spec sheet says 2.7. The one magazine test I can't find right now, I seem to remember it stating the factory went with the larger capacity xc tank for the 1982 500cr because the new bigger engine and the huge 44mm Mikuni carb used more fuel than the 430cr and would run out of fuel on a national outdoor track when ridden by a pro, hence the reason for 2.9 gallon xc tank? So I should leave my nice white tanks alone, and find a nice 2.9 gallon tank. Anybody have a NOS one they want to sell? Thanks again, Joe

Yes me and the tank is 2.9.
