  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Husqvarna
A Class
hey every one,
I have just blown up my 2010 TC250 locked up the big end and damaged my bore!
I have researched some ways to fix it and these are my options. 1. is to buy new oem cylinder and they are $1350.80AUS so basicly im not doing that ahaha, option 2. is to send it away and have it bored out and be sleaved and new nicasiled for $450AUS. option 3. resleave it locally with a cast iron bore for $450AUS. or option 4. is to replace it with a 290cc cylinder witch is only available through my local bike shop $785AUS with piston and gaskets ( i have searched for hours online for a big bore kit for my 2010 tc250 and found NOTHING!) all options work out to be about the same money? what should i do?

Thanks Trent

any opinions welcome....

I would do the big bore kit. Might as well upgrade if you have to do it anyway. The only concern there would be if it bumped you up a class if you're racing.

If you were to keep the cylinder I would make sure that it had the coating on it. From what I have read, that is the way to go. There aren't after market cylinder kits though? Athena? Cylinder works? I would call them if they aren't listed. Also, I would figure out what other years may work.

I looked into all of this for a yz250f and repairing and coating was the same cost as a new cylinder which meant I could just get it in a couple days instead of waiting. Plus I liked the security of a new cylinder all together.

I've seen worse too. Maybe a job and hone like Tinken sez with some fresh rings would be in order if the big end hadn't let go. You could've gotten lots more miles outta that.

But if you're doing the big end, it'll need new wrist pin and bearing and check of the con rod, etc. etc. If you've gotta do all that, go for the big bore I say. Provided of course that is for a plated bore with proven jet changes etc. that will make it run right.

cant tell how deep the damage is....if doable, id replate. AFTER i totaly replaced the bottom end (rod, crank, everything).

other than that. no replacement for displacement. transplant the lung from this puppy into the TC's cradle an really wax yer buddys. cr430_87.jpg

$450 for a rebuild is way expensive. Strip, plate and diamond hone should be around $175 and your cylinder doesn't look that bad at all, I have seen far worse.
$450 for a rebuild in Australia sounds about right, we get screwed on everything price wise. A 2013 TE310R costs $12,500 here, and you don't get much house for if you pay less than $450,000****************************************

holy carp mate! you rob banks for livins down under er what????
yep, we just about need too!!
Wages in OZ are generally pretty good, depending on what you do, the minium wage here is $16 per hour or $608 per week but that doesn't go very far with the high prices we pay for everything.

yikes!!! beers on you when i come visit mate. :D

back on topic- wana 'stress' something. key word there. if an engine locks up it stresses the rod. big time. since the bottom stuck, if i read this right, there's probably an oiling issue. find the cause of that, then, replace the crank kit complete. then move on to the top end. worry about the bottom end first. trash everything touching the crank. check the cases for race/bore issues too (spalling etc). i always hand out a sheet to clients that come in with a stuck motor in case they wana reuse the rod. a lot of times if the piston in a smoker sticks you can save the lower assbly. if you stick it hard the rod should always be replaced. if anything at all happens to the lower end i get a complete crank kit after i ID the cause. had a client once just due a top end. i told him no wrty on the job- the rod's smoked. he made it 1/8 tank breakin it in- SNAP. sorry man. told ya!

I raced one of those 87 beasts. That bike would flat wear you out.

Yeah so is the price gouging too (off topic), l love to support the local bloke but when just about everything is 200% marked up!!

(on Topic) Trent, I second PVDuke, investigate what caused it (sorry bloke am a 2t boy) then go down the route of a big bore kit...run out of oil, oil pump blocked, bouncing the limiter and something let go? If your handy with tools, husky manual and youtube, you can tear down the motor yourself.

PM anthony_1978, he has a YZF250 that he totally locked up and the bloke rebuilding comes highly recommended, plus he's turning it in to 300cc as well...don't worry posting on that site as their love for husky's are legendary :D

Are you guys blowing a bubble down there?

Sounds like homes in CA, USA ... before the burst ... Mortgage backed securities sound familar? ...

I would go the big bore kit route... Athena kits preceded the factory 310 and were a popular upgrade.

I worked for a few months east of Melbourne a few years back (Traralgon). I was at the big bike show in Melbourne and blown away by the cost of bikes there.
One good side effect of that though....was that people tend to keep some nice older iron in good fettle. I saw a lot of really nice vintage bikes that were daily riders that you just don't see in the states.

Don't get me started on the $12-$18 six packs of beer...:D

cast iron sleeve, its same price as nicasil but you get a few rebores out of it, ive no issue with my kwawaski wich had a resleve put in three years ago this things a commuter an done 9k on it 2 sets o rings and a light hone plenty of life left in it, also if a ring lets go it doesnt grab the nicasil and unpeel it as ive seen in the past.
the ultimate desicion rests on your shoulders. but i recommend a sleeve.
