  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Weak spark, bike cuts out at idle

Huskymad

Husqvarna
B Class
Riding the other day, bike cut out at idle, then wouldn't fire on elec. starter. Would kick start but would cut out when ever I stopped to idle. So far in the shed tonight I have worked out the spark is really weak, checked all connections, cleaned them with CRC and compressed air, swapped coil and CDI off dads bike. Still nothing. Sprayed inside kill switch but did not pull apart completely, will try that next I think.

Any ideas/thoughts greatly appreciated as I missed out on riding and hoping to get this sorted so I can get out this weekend! I have dads 510 that I can swap parts off and test.

Put a voltmeter on the battery, should be above 13v at idle, above 14v when revved.

I have read a couple of threads that talk about their stator/exciter coil going out. Hopefully, they will see this thread and tell you what they did.

After swapping every electrical component off dads bike, (except entire wiring harness) checking every connector, and following wires, it turned out to be the aftermarket ignition barell. Glad to have it sorted!

Was an old barell off a Honda cb 250, 1970-80 I think. It was in the switch itself. I have strong spark back but after more testing it seems there may also be a problem in the kill switch/elec. start assembly. I have no spark when cranking but strong spark off the kicker. Will do more investigating, but as I have a good spark back I can now go riding this weekend!

Turns out it was not the ignition barell! The kill switch had slight carbon build up across contacts, which resulted in some of the current from the coil going to earth through the starter motor contacts when cranking. So it would get a strong spark when kicking but when using the starter it had a very weak/non existent spark.

That makes sense, thanks for posting your solution, we'll add it to the database of stuff to look at!
