  • Hi everyone,

    As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

    When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

    Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

    Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

    Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

125-200cc WB177 Ride Report (short one)

A 125(177) that causes trembling and shaking. I want one. The only two bikes ive ridden that caused that were a 2003 ktm 250sx, known to be the most violent and powerful 250 2 stroke from the showroon ever, and a. Cbr954rr set up for the track. Bike was an animal, just looking at the throttle had it ripping to the rev limiter and front tire pointed to the sky. It broke loose a full racing slick with ease in the firsr 3 gears, scary.
I guess the rest of the World calls them Fireblades for a reason......
 
Seriously, i bought another 954rr after that one bone stock and very low miles, it was an absolute kitten next to the race bike i had before it. It seriously was about the difference between a 600 and a 1000 in acceleration. The race bike was damn near terrifying and im pretty much as much of an adrenaline junky as youll find.

But i digress, back to your regularly scheduled 177 program!

Unfortunately I have to work this Sunday. Planned on devoting my time to d36 enduro series this year. Anytime you want to get together and give it a try we can arrange a ride. You going to Shasta?

There is snow at crandel, should be perfect for the next couple weeks. I've been hitting dogtown every weekend for a while now, my favorite place and most wet weather suitable and I certainly HAVE NOT been hitting all the stuff that was closed by the BLM a few years back. For some reason the brush is getting beat back on the trails though, must be the deer and bears, haha. I do White Pines fairly often also if I'm going with guys that want something a bit easier.

Let me know when you want to come up. I can guide you on any number of loops that will leave you feeling like you just did a national caliber enduro, the kind of stuff that when you lay down at night to go to sleep you still feel the motion, kind of like being sea sick.

Good luck at Shasta, should be perfect conditions. The Reding Dirt Riders saved my life last year after a freak impaling by a tree branch that led to a bunch of veins in my arm being ripped out and severe bleeding. I can't believe I have to work. I might drive up on Saturday just to pay my respects.
 
I did a driveway test of the 177 with the fmf200 pipe tonight and I think it's the ticket for off road. I can't believe the tune-ability of these motors with the different pipes. The fmf is a torque monster on the 165 but as a 177 it doesnt loose any on the bottom and has more mid range and top end. I plan on giving the fmf200 a good off road test this weekend.
 
Dog Town.......been there a few times......my buddys brother lives in Goveland.... Never rode White Pines, would not mind getting up that way, easy drive for me coming out of Lodi, Crandell works too.
Shasta should be good with the rain from a week or so.
Didn't mean to derail your thread......just was thinking if you'd be racing the 177. I'll drop you a pm. You racing Georgetown?

I hope to race georgtown. Work has been crazy. I was promoted and haven't gotten used to the responsibility yet. What did you think of dog town? Most people go there and cant find the good shit but I know where it's at. Dogtown is the most difficult place to ride that I've found in our neck of the woods.

White Pines is small but has some great stuff and not nearly as rocky as crandel.
 
Being that my buddys (343w) brother lives in the area we rode some killer trails....this was several years ago... but it was crazy...and I'll leave it at that. I am about 99% sure I rode the good stuff! I think they tried to kill me out there, slick rock kinda stuff, big step ups.....
I've rode Crandell several times, never ventured into the old burn area...

So I had a good ride over the weekend with the 177 and fmf200 pipe. I am really surprised by this motor. I had expected more bottom end but the thing is really a mid range and top end monster. I think the bottom end is as good as the 165 but is way more powerful everywhere else. I never cared for the fmf200 pipe on the 165 because it didn't have the over rev I was looking for but on the 177 it screams. The 177 is still a bit violent, as is, it would be perfect for desert or Moto. I tried 13-48 gearing on advice from folks here but I was fanning the clutch like crazy in the tight steep stuff, I think I'll put the 50 rear back on until I can get the WR trans swapped in.

I said in a previous post that I was not a fan of the Lectron on the little bikes but this 177 needs to be smoothed out. I bolted on a 36mm Lectron that I had on the shelf and rode it around the yard and up the street, seams to have more and smoother power. I'll test it this coming weekend.
 
any more updates/ride reviews on this kit? i'm on the verge of going back to a 250 but man i don't think i can give up this little 165.

are there more cost effective options for us WB165 riders to go 177?
 
I'm getting very frustrated with a shoulder that keeps falling out of socket and hasn't allowed me to ride anywhere near my ability. I've only got about 6 hours on this motor so I haven't been able to give you all the feedback I wanted too.

The 177 is a rocket. For off road the fmf200 pipe, 10oz fww and 36mm Lectron is unbelievable. It really is head and shoulders more power than the 165. I'm able to drop a tooth off the rear sprocket and really spread the gearing compared to the 165. I've got a WR trans waiting to drop in when I get around to it and I think that will make this the ultimate woods setup.

For Moto or desert I run a DEP200 pipe and pull the fww off. This thing pulls harder than most 250's through the mid and top end with this pipe. With this setup its quite a handful in the woods.

My shoulder isnt getting any better and if I end up biting the bullet and getting it operated on this bike might be for sale. I'll let you guys know first.

Nice report. I've got the same setup (36 lectron, FMF & 10oz fww) minus the stroker crank. Mines setup for race gas and pulls pretty good.

I'd love to compare them someday..... like maybe this August!?!? Assuming you're not laid up from surgery would you be interested in joining me and a buddy in Downieville in early to mid Aug? I'll be in the sierra for 2 weeks and looking to finally hit D'ville.
