  • Hi everyone,

As you all know, Coffee (Dean) passed away a couple of years ago. I am Dean's ex-wife's husband and happen to have spent my career in tech. Over the years, I occasionally helped Dean with various tech issues.

When he passed, I worked with his kids to gather the necessary credentials to keep this site running. Since then (and for however long they worked with Coffee), Woodschick and Dirtdame have been maintaining the site and covering the costs. Without their hard work and financial support, CafeHusky would have been lost.

Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been working to migrate the site to a free cloud compute instance so that Woodschick and Dirtdame no longer have to fund it. At the same time, I’ve updated the site to a current version of XenForo (the discussion software it runs on). The previous version was outdated and no longer supported.

Unfortunately, the new software version doesn’t support importing the old site’s styles, so for now, you’ll see the XenForo default style. This may change over time.

Coffee didn’t document the work he did on the site, so I’ve been digging through the old setup to understand how everything was running. There may still be things I’ve missed. One known issue is that email functionality is not yet working on the new site, but I hope to resolve this over time.

Thanks for your patience and support!

Was this a mistake?

Mike,

Upstate, Toy Tech, Halls, BMP, etc... are good dealers. I go thru Halls since I am upstate, several hours away and they ship everything to me. Try to use a sponsor of Cafe Husky. They support this site. I do know that Halls realize that I am of distance and there is help in the back if I need tech questions answered. I bet alot of dealer sponsors on here will help you as well. I fact, don't know of any that wouldn't bend over backwards, to get your business.
Pick one and build a relationship with them on the phone.

You ever need help, just ask me or others. I have spent alot of hours on the phone helping guys with there bikes. Believe me, we have helped guys that never did more than change a spark plug.

You have one of the best bikes out there. So far, feedback on these bikes is great. I shocked them when I took mine back due to a connector not snapped in the connector to ecu. #1 you have a start button #2 keihin injection #3 Kyb suspension #4 one of the best handling frames #5 has the Husky roominess/ergonomics to move around on. #6 you have a 310, not a 250 with a 290 big bore kit. Just enough motor for a perfect balance between a 250 and 450. In other words, some grunt to get you out of trouble or maybe get you into trouble. Really, stand back and look at your bike. Look at all the italian artwork that went into it. I said QUOTE, " I would never own another 4 stroke again, unless it had a button", Got it now!

I got some good riding in Saturday. I have owned alot of bikes and modified them, suspension and motor wise. But I have to admit, this is the best bike I have bought off the shelf. Do the suspension/tires/gearing and you are good to go. Want lil more power/spread, get the Pro Circuit system. Want more towards a 450, then get the Husky Get ECU and computer set up and tweek away. I have not pulled the trigger on that stuff yet, because I want a 310, not a 450. Well, maybe next winter?

Yes, aftermarket is soft on Husky's compared to other bikes, but that will come. Heck just a couple years ago, we had little resources for graphics. Now, they are all over the place.

I almost pulled the trigger on the Ktm 350, but almost choked on the price. Did I make the right decision? You bet ya!

Mike, these 310's are really selling out there but they are not on Cafe Husky. Some of these guys are coming from alot of other brands.

In another 5 years, you might look back and say. I should of kept that ol 310, because the new 2018 bikes might be so epa regulated, that they wont perform. It was the best bike I ever owned.

If you love the bike I don't know how it could be a mistake. I had some "buyers remorse" when I bought my TE 250 after hearing such great things about the 310 but I love my bike and that's what really matters. The dealers (and mechanics) here leave alot to be desired but I love to wrench and so far haven't had a problem with parts (other than a 2 week wait for that nasty little bearing that connects the shock to the linkage). I found one locally during the wait and was only down for a day or two anyway. There are a ton of orange bikes over here and all I can think is that those guys overpaid for a bike that doesn't handle as well as mine. Why do they all keep asking to try mine if theirs are so good? The few who I've actually trusted enough to trade off with for a few miles have all raved about the handling and power of my 250 and the whole time I've been on their bikes have just wanted mine back...

Or look at it this way...we went racing last weekend, 90 minute GP race....
00:18:49 Average lap time winning Husqvarna TXC310R stock engine and exhaust
00:19:53 Average lap time 2nd place 250 2 Stroke KTM
00:19:53 Average lap time 3rd place 350 KTM (yes it was essentially a tie for 2nd)

That #1 rider was on a KTM until a year ago and he had to battle to beat these guys....now its a cake walk most weekends..The 310 really is a very nice package right out of the box and with the suspension set up for the rider it is fantastic. We have had to push FMF and PC a bit to get pipes coming but they are starting to deliver on those and as has been said above all the components are readily available. KYBs are used on lots of bikes, 18 and 21 rims are common as houseflys. Its sorta like the billion iPhone apps available when you can only really use a couple dozen.....maybe more people make more stuff for KTMs but most of it is redundant or a fashion statement of some kind or another.

I'm not a mechanic either, so it doesnt really matter if I can get them or not. It takes me three hours to install handguards and grips cause I'm so freaking anal.

That´s the best chance to start wrenching more! Being anal is a good character trait for a wrenching person. You make less mistakes and won´t do half arsed shit. Don´t worry man, order parts online, look at parts catalogues and workshop manuals. It´s not rocket science.

If anything bothers you a lot, then yes it was a mistake, regardless of topic. You really should feel good about your decisions.

I've made a *lot* of what I thought were mistakes, and in the past I've continued to evaluate my decisions until either undoing what was a mistake, or prove to myself that it was not a mistake. Possibly a 'stop' order on a companies stock I bought, possibly talking to co-workers at the new job to find out why things are the way they are, etc.

If I had to re-evaluate a 'did I buy the right bike' decision, I would ride it, a lot. Preferably with other people that had the same bike or bike manufacturer so information could flow person-to-person about the details of the bike.
words of wisdom, for sure

I was thinking the same thing lol. There's a big vote going on today for those guys so their a little emotional on the forum lately lol

Guess my little "joke" about KTM's came at a bad time.
A year and a half ago I decided to treat myself to a brand new bike - and had a hard time deciding between the KTM350 and the Husky310. There were a couple of things which helped me decide in the end - this forum and it's members being a big one. I now have 100 hard hours on the 310 with no failures or issues other than a bad Ballistic battery and a leaky fork seal. If you ask the guys I ride with they will all tell you that the Husky has made me a better (faster) rider. My main competition at races rides a KTM350 so I've had a lot of chances to see how the bikes compare in action. The KTM is only slightly better in 1 area - when revved out like a 250 it makes nearly 450 power. The 310 makes more power down low, handles better, and is always forgiving to ride - if you get to turn just a little too fast just pitch it in - most of the time you ride it out thinking how easy it was. Your local KTM dealer should be able to handle valve adjustments (I've had one) and it should be a long time before you need anything else. This forum is always there for support and good advice.

hehehehe...that's funny. :p

serial- if you cant find parts for a husky, yer ordering for the wrong bike or your phone is dead. husky is by far the easiest bike ive EVER had to get parts for.

So not true. Example, go to motosport and tell me what all you see for the bike? or even rockymountainatvmc, chaparal, partsunlimited, etc. They just don't carry stuff for anything but the big 5 it seems like, and its kind of annoying.

And go to the Cafe Husky marketplace and find it all.

I think we are talking about the difference between PARTS and accessories/bling/fashion. Some people live for that stuff and that's fine. Some people love Ikea and WalMart because cheaper, more choices and good-enough works for them. But there is a place for higher quality, fits the purpose, provides improvement, and that tends to be the world that Husky vendors and riders live in. Aint none of them getting rich at it, but Zip-Ty, 7602, Motosportz, my suspension guy Tom Watson and my dealer Bills have already supplied me every thing I need plus several pieces of shiny metal that might even qualify as bling. I can get an FMF pipe through my dealer, direct from FMF or from some of those sources you mentioned.

"motosport .......or even rockymountainatvmc, chaparal, part unlimited"

These guys can sometimes be a good source for last years riding gear fashions at cheap prices, just like Wal Mart is the place to go when I need a plastic tub ....but otherwise I find myself able to go through life without the mass marketeers intruding too much. I realize that in some areas some options are harder to access and it may make perfectly good sense to ride Hondas or Suzukis and order from RMATVMC. When I lived on the ID/WA border the best dealer around was a BMW/Honda/Kawasaki dealer and I rode Hondas and BMWs. When I moved to the Willamette Valley I found Bills and now I ride Husqvarnas...and if Bill starts selling Husabergs or Betas or Kawasakis then I will very likely switch. I have friendly relationships with 2 KTM dealers and if Bill folds I would do business with them before I would go back to riding Hondas, just because the local Honda dealers arent real dirt riders in my book.

The vendors and dealers and suppliers and factory reps and riders are all part of our little corner of the motorcycling world and my relationship with them is worth a whole lot more than having 9 colors of seat covers and plastic available overnight (but I did have a red seat made by a local guy for my 610 a few years ago and I just bought a set of all white plastic for my 449 made by UFO through Bills Motorcycles Plus).

So, you're saying you buy bikes from the closest dealer???? No matter what they are???

No I did not say that....

I see the words "best" local dealer in my post ....but the brand is a modest factor at best to me. Local by my definition is someplace I can drive to on Saturday.

Bills is 60 miles away, there are a dozen dealers closer, but none that are both closer and better. I could detail the weaknesses of each but that doesnt change the fact that I have actually visited almost every dealer within 100 miles and found BMP to best fit my definition of a great dealer.

I have lots of choices where I live now, but I have also lived in rural areas where I had limited choices so "best" in any particular situation varies. If the only place in town sells Hodakas and they are competent then Im likely to ride Hodakas ......I actually worked for a Hodaka dealer in a very small town once upon a time :-) As it happens, if you live in a rural area of the US your nearest dealer is probably a Honda dealer. Honda has something acceptable for almost everyone ....so if the dealer isnt a PITA then I would ride a Honda.

I have owned several Husqvarnas, many Suzukis, a few Hondas, 1 Yamaha, 1 Bultaco, a handful of BMWs, 1 Buell and probably some things Ive forgotten.... In almost every case I made my purchases based on my relationship with the dealers/sellers, but because of any brand issues or availability of custom parts. Functional part availability yes, bling no.

Mike, your right! Probably be better with something else, sounds like you would be happier.
Next time research your purchase, don't assume, and you'll maybe be satisfied.

Sounds like you would have been asking yourself the same question if you would have bought orange.

"I could have bought a kick-ass Husky, dressed her to got to battle and still been under the orange sticker, did I make a mistake?"

You did just fine! Don't let life waste away, go rip up some dirt!

Here's the '13 TXC250R ready for battle, haven't bought one Husky part...Cycra, CV4, Supersprox, RK chain, TM Designs, Pro Circuit, Enduro Eng., Zipty oil filter gaskets and aftermarket filters...
All off the shelf.

If you need some aftermarket part numbers; PM me, they will bolt right on the 310.

Ah no need to jump on his ass...if we all researched purchases I wouldn't own my Chevy but sometimes it's more about what you want lol. Lets face it, motorcycles for most of us lack any sense at all. Their time consuming, cost a rediculous amount of money, and can't be justified as a necessity. We're all f'ed in the head for loving this sport to begin with lol
